Every Child Ready to Read Skills/Practices

Sing—Kids sing along with songs during storytime
Talk— Ask the kids about what soups they like to eat, why they like them, what color the soup is, etc. Why do we eat soup?
Read—Ask the kids to call out colors during ‘Purple Stew’ song/ For “Duck Soup” ask the kids why Duck has gone off to find the missing ingredients for his soup. Why do his friends think he’s in the soup?

Write—Kids write their names on nametags for storytime.
Play—Kids play along to the action rhymes during storytime/stirring their soup, etc.

Possible Asides to Parents & Caregivers

·         Reading helps us learn that letters look different, and have different names and sounds.

Tip: Make letters from clay or play dough. Children love to play with letters in their name.

·         Very young children can understand spoken words long before they can speak any of them — so talk to them and you will be amazed at how your child responds.
