Description
- Overview:
- This lesson works well with developing writers to help them learn to incorporate transition words into their writing. Students begin by manipulating sentence strips to illustrate how changing the transition words in a piece of text changes the overall meaning. Then they complete a chart that helps them to understand that there are a variety of transition words, and they are used for specific purposes and to signal different relationships between ideas.
This material was remixed based on Transition Words and Phrases by DPI Writing Strategies. The remixed lesson was created to be used with adult learners. The original lesson can be found by clicking on the link that is included with this resource.

Quality of Explanation of the Subject Matter: Strong (2)
It would be difficult for a student to use this material on his own to learn about transitions. The lesson plan was developed to be used in a classroom with a teacher leading the instruction. With a teacher providing an explanation, however, the lesson does work well to help students strengthen their understanding of transitions.

Utility of Materials Designed to Support Teaching: Strong (2)
This is a strong lesson plan, but teachers are left on their own to find the independent practice for their students to use. It would be improved if the worksheet were provided.

Opportunities for Deeper Learning: Strong (2)
Both the sentence strip activity and the Using Transitions Chart encourage students to think about the relationships between ideas, which is a critical thinking skill. This lesson also includes practice with categorizing, which also fosters critical thinking. Lastly, by providing a chart, students are taking control of organizing their notes, which teaches them how to learn something new. Teachers should talk to their students about how the chart could be a useful tool when organizing one's own writing.
