Lesson Description:

Students will learn where various pieces of kitchen equipment are in the lab space, create digital posters to learn more about a single piece of equipment, & watch poster presentations to learn how to properly & safely use different pieces of equipment.

**Can provide more or less times as necessary for your students. Timeline provided is based on a 50 minute class period

Lab Set-up:

Day 1: Set out the different pieces of equipment for students to identify. Set out different pieces in each individual lab-spaces so students can rotate around to each space to identify the different equipment. Project assignment sheet for students to view.

Day 2: No set-up required.

Days 3-4: Project students' posters for their presentations. Provide each student with a copy of the Kitchen Equipment Info Sheet so they can record information during other students' presentations.

Instructional Plan:

Anticipatory Set/Pre-Activity:

Set out 20 various pieces of kitchen equipment in the individual lab-spaces. Each student will need a Kitchen Equipment Identification worksheet to identify the equipment set out. After students have been through each space to identify the equipment, go through each piece of equipment with them. Listening to what they identified it as & correcting them when necessary.

Activities (i.e. instructions, lesson, lab or project):

After completing the Kitchen Equipment Identification activity, introduce the Kitchen Equipment Poster project to students. Project the Kitchen Equipment Poster assignment sheet for students to look at as the assignment is being explained. It is ideal to include the assignment sheet in the assignment created within the LMS utilized (Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.). Once the project has been explained, provide students will class time to create their digital posters. Remember to remind them about the presentation of their posters & the demonstration they will have to complete with it.

Before students begin presenting their posters, provide students with a copy of the Kitchen Equipment Info sheet to record information from other students' presentations. This ensures that students are recording the key information from each piece of equipment. Digital posters can be displayed for presentations, or they may be printed off & presented in a gallery walk format.

Closure:

After all the presentations are complete, review the locations of the equipment or functions of the equipment with students. Discuss appropriate times for using certain pieces of equipment & connect action words within recipes to the piece of equipment that will complete that job.

Assessment :

Formative: The Kitchen Equipment digital posters will serve as a formative assessment for this topic.

Summative: The summative assessment for this topic will be students successfully completing lab with the correct equipment in a safe manner.

Make any necessary modifications to the activity or project based on the needs of students.

Safety Precautions:

Remind students to not touch or manipulate the various pieces of kitchen equipment that are set out for the first activity.

This was designed to be used with high school students, but could easily be used at the middle school level as well. Feel free to give students a specific program/website/app to make their digital posters in, if students need more specific guidelines.
