Learning Grammar and Vocabulary using GVScapes

English continues to spread, not only as a global language but also as the language of science, technology and advanced research (Grabe and Stoller, 2011). The spread of English appears to have taken on increasing importance, particularly in academic fields. In addition, ‘[i]n countries around the world, school systems requires students to learn English for access to information and for the eventual ability to compete economically and professionally’ (Grabe, 2009, p.6).

Not only is the English language important as a language of science, technology and advanced research in the 21st century, but it has been adopted as the medium of instruction across the higher education landscape (e.g. Chang, 2010; Björkman, 2011; Beckett and Li, 2012). Today, there is a growing number of universities offering academic courses in English, such as in Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam and South Korea (Hu, 2007; Björkman, 2011). This has thus contributed to the growing global phenomenon of English as a Medium of Instructions (EMI) in higher education contexts.

English is learned since kindergarten until the university level in Malaysia. In the context of UMS, the English courses are made compulsory for students. However, despite the years spent to learn the language in schools, some students appear to struggle when communicating in English. In view of this, various interventions such as the English Language Flagship programme, ‘Say it in English’ campaign and English Carnival were carried out to provide the platforms for UMS students to use the language. Apart from that, four proficiency English courses are offered to UMS students, such as Essential English Communication, English for Oral Communication, Reading and writing in English as well as English for Occupational Purposes. These courses are offered to students with lower Malaysian University English Test (MUET) Band 3, Band 2 and Band 1. The teaching of grammar and vocabulary are embedded along with the four language skills: (1) listening; (2) reading; (3) speaking; and writing skills.

The issue in English language teaching here is akin to the information/input that students are able to retain and apply following certain lessons in relation to English grammar and vocabulary enrichment. In addition, another issue in language teaching could relate to the access for teachers to monitor their students’ learning. In view of this, GVScapes is developed to provide solutions to the above-mentioned issues in assisting teaching and learning activities.   Therefore, an android-based fun quiz application with Augmented Reality (AR) technology which was location based was developed so students could experience interactive learning environment
