Eat This Not That

Eat This Not That

Snacks can help you get nutrients you need to grow and maintain a healthy weight. It's important that you choose a variety of snacks from each of the five food groups over the course of a week. Examples from each food group include:

  • Grains: whole-grain crackers, cereal, rice cakes, sliced bread, mini bagels, graham crackers, whole wheat tortillas
  • Vegetables: carrots, celery, bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, broccoli, green beans, avocados
  • Fruits: apple, strawberry, banana, pineapple, kiwi, peach, mango, melon, grapes, berries
  • Dairy: low-fat cottage cheese, yogurt, fat-free or low-fat milk, low-fat cheese slices or string cheese
  • Protein: boiled egg, peanut butter, bean dip, hummus, slices of lean turkey or chicken, pumpkin seeds
  1. Choose snacks lower in calories. Calories are the measure of the energy a portion of food or beverage provides. Calories are the fuel you need to work and play. When choosing what to eat and drink, it's important to get the right mix- enough nutrients, but not too many calories. You will gain weight when the calories you eat and drink are greater than the calories you burn.
  2. Choose snacks that have little to no empty calories. Empty calories add calories to food but few or no nutrients. Empty calories come from solid fats and added sugars. Added sugars are sugars and syrups that are added to food or beverages when they are processed or prepared. This does not include naturally occurring sugars such as those in milk and fruits.
  3. Choose snacks that are lower in sodium. Try to choose snacks with less than 200 milligrams (mg) of sodium per serving. Sodium is found in salt. Too much sodium is bad for your health. It can increase your blood pressure and your risk for heart attack and stroke.
