Instructional Plan:

Anticipatory Set/Pre-Activity:

At the beginning of class, students will work with their elbow partner to discuss the following question:
What is a spending plan, aka budget? (They will have one minute to come up with a definition.) This should be a review question from a previous lesson.

Direct students to share their answers with the entire class.

Benefits/Explanation/Real-World Connection:

The benefits of this lesson are to help students find a real-world application that they can use in their everyday life to manage their money wisely.

Activities (i.e., instructions, warm-up, lesson, cool-down):

1. Review with students about the parts of a budget. Discuss with them the various categories that they may have in their budget. Use the Spending Plan Template from www.takechargetoday.arizona.edu.

2. Direct students to write down what categories do they need in their budget.
3. Once they have identified their categories, then they need to explore different budgeting tools that would work best for them. Remind them not to limit themselves to just app programs but also various software programs such as Quick Books. They will need to think about the details as to where all of their income will come from such as birthday present, mom and/or dad, work, etc.
4. Each student will be guided to create a presentation on a budgeting tool using Google slides or PowerPoint. The presentation must include the following:

  1. The name of the budgeting tool they have selected.
  2. A demonstration on how to use the budgeting tool. (They will have to do this in front of the class physically, or they can include a recording of how to use this budget tool in their presentation.
  3. A description of at least three of the features of the budgeting tool.
  4. A recommendation of whether or not to use the app based on its ease of use, and whether or not the student will use the budgeting tool app.
  5. Students will then need to present this to the class sometime during this unit.

Closure:

Exit Ticket: Ask them to identify on a sticky note as they leave the classroom what category will be in their budget.

Assessment :

Students will independently explore budgeting tools that they would use to manage their money wisely and present on their findings.
