Teacher Planning:

Equipment/Materials Needed:

Beanbags-36 (6 of each color),  Hula Hoop-12 or 18 depending on class size (2 or 3 of each color),                                        Colored Bucket-6 (1 each color), Something (rope, tape, cones, etc etc) to create approx 8 ft circle boundary on the floor.

Time Required for Lesson:

30 minutes

Diagram/Setup:

Teams of 2-3 students need 2 hoops (spaceships) outside the circle at each bucket (power canister), teams of 4 or more students need 3 hoops. Scatter the beanbags (resources) around general space, so that each color is spread out evenly.                                  Buckets go inside the center circle (home planet).

Benefits/Explanation/Real-World Connection:

Well designed and purposeful team building activities create opportunities for students and classes/teams to face emotional, social and physical challenges. Team Challenge activities provides situations where students must create and work as a team, develop and apply strategies to achieve the objective given. As a result of effective instruction facilitates self discovery and that the process of reaching the goal is most important and the outcome results from the process. Effective Team building provides students with the experience and creates an understanding that failure is only temporary and changes can be made to continue on the path towards a goal. The teacher must intentionally teach respectful competition (without the other team you cant play!), teamwork, selflessness, and character. Valuable tools for the duration of each students life.

Activities (i.e. instructions, warm-up, lesson, cool-down):

Goal: collect all your resources in the least amount of time.

Tell the students that an attack has been made on the planet, an explosion has sent resources (beanbags) into outer space (general space). Your team is trying to collect the resources and put them into the power canister (bucket) on your home planet (center circle). The spaceships (hula hoops) have also been damaged but still work slightly…

Rules for the challenge:

1-A spaceship CANNOT move with someone inside … they only protect you from outer space.

Spaceship moving with someone inside = Penalty

2-You may not TOUCH the floor outside of home planet or spaceship.

Touch the floor with any part of body or clothes = Penalty

3-Everyone must travel through space to collect resources … work as a team.

Anyone left behind = Penalty

4-Your team may only leave from/return to home planet using their teams “dock” or “port”.

Enter or Exit home planet from other teams “dock” or “port” = Penalty

PENALTY or SACRIFICE = return to home planet + loss of 1 resource (teacher choice-from hand or from bucket)

Give the teams 60 seconds at the start of the challenge to discuss their strategy/plan/route/path/ideas … on the G-O signal start the timer (everyone must be on home planet to start) If or when a team collects all 6 of their resources, depending on time, tell them they can collect a different color (teacher choice of color-choose 1 that has most left in space)

Closure:

Bring the team to the "Huddle" and ask the students,

"Who did you see helping the team, and which 'Tool for Success' they used?" "What did you see hurting the team, how?"

Make sure to emphasize naming the person who helped and identifying the behavior that hurt without naming student!

TOOLS for SUCCESS: Curiosity - Self Esteem - Grit - Self Awareness - Self Control - Persistence

Assessment :

Record if the team is able to complete the challenge.

Time how long it takes the team to complete the challenge.
