Lesson Topic:

Financial Analysis

Lesson Description:

Students will utilize this project to research actual corporate financial documents. Students will summarize key components of income statements, balance sheets, and other financial documents of publicly traded companies and will apply accounting related concepts and academic vocabulary. 

Learning Goals/Outcomes:

Students will apply financial and accounting concepts through corporate annual reports and data.

Equipment/Materials/Software Needed: Computer, Production software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint - or similar).

Time Required for Lesson: Up to 10 class days, including research and presentation time.

Technology Use:

Software: Word processing software, spreadsheet software, presentation software, Internet.

Hardware: Computer and Internet access.

Instructional Plan:

Anticipatory Set/Pre-Activity:

Introduce project. Share information about annual reports. Show examples and non-examples of good ,completed projects with a rubric. 

Benefits/Explanation/Real-World Connection:

Utilization of real-world financial data. Provides students the opportunity to review financial information of actual companies they could invest in. 

Activities (i.e. instructions, warm-up, lesson, cool-down):

Research annual report. Seek information on profit, revenue, expenses, assets, liabilities, dividends, etc. Summarize information in a spreadsheet and write a written summary of company research. 

Closure:

Students will present their findings in a presentation software template. Teacher may elect to have students do a peer review to provide students with additional feedback. 

Assessment :

(Utilize a rubric and project summary for assessment. Provide students feedback on completed presentation, written summary, and spreadsheet. Provide students with daily feedback on project progress and milestones.
