Brief Tool DescriptionWhat is its purpose? Is it for a particular dimension of the Thoughtful Classroom framework? What do the teacher and students do during the strategy that make it valuable? This tool prepares students to become more self-directed and successful learners by giving them a framework (a Goal Card) that they can use to record personal learning goals, establish plans for achieving those goals, and reflect on their progress
Example(s) of How to Use the Tool in the ClassroomDoes it lend itself best to a particular subjects? Have you used the strategy successfully with a particular topic? Is there a lesson you can describe that illustrates how to use it?Grades 6-8 complete goal cards three times during the school year.  Teacher directs students to us the SMART goal framework (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic/Relevant, and Time-bound) to create their goals for success in ELA.  Goal cards are posted in teh classroom and goal progress is tracked weekly.  At the end of each marking period, students reflect on their goals and identify areas of strength and areas in need of improvement in their efforts to achieve their goals.
Suggestions for AdaptationsCould it be easily adapted for a higher/lower grade? For a different subject area? For assessment? This most certainly be used in many other grade levels, down to Kindergarten and across subject areas including specials class such as gym, art, music.
