About the Boise State World Languages Resource Center (WLRC) Language Activity Repository

The activities provided by the Boise State World Languages Resource Center (WLRC) serve as foundational activities which can be adapted by any language and scaled up or down on the proficiency scale. Many of these activities offer an English Version that is “language-agnostic” to provide language instructors from around the country a platform to remix these instructional materials, infusing them with their target language and culture! The activities within the Pathways Project OER Repository seek to help students solidify their interpersonal speaking and interpretive skills through task-based situations or communicative activities. These activities should be facilitated in the target language for approximately 90% (or more), per the recommendation of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

How to use the WLRC Repository’s Activities:

1. Use the Activity as is:

Before you begin:

  • Most activities are 30 minutes in duration, unless otherwise specified.
  • Be sure to read through the activity description, and review the list of required materials. You will notice that the activity materials are also highlighted in yellow throughout the activity instructions.

2. Remix for Your Language Classroom:

When you are ready to begin remixing the activity, in order to adapt it for the needs of your language classroom, simply click the blue “Remix This Resource” button at the top of your screen. This will then take you to a screen with a NEW, editable version of this activity. The text provided in purple is a suggestion of what you might say to your students in the target language, and may be altered for different levels and age groups. All activities have “NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do” statements, a warm-up, a main activity, and a wrap-up.

Many of the activities include printable cards and other instructional materials such as Google Slideshows. If you would like to make changes to these materials for your classroom, follow the instructions below:

  • Google Slideshows:
    • To begin, go to File -> Copy to create an editable version of the slideshow.
    • Once finished with your changes, please complete the following steps to share:
    • Click on Share

    • Ensure link sharing is on and allow external access.

¡Estás invitado! Novice Mid

Description:

In this activity, students will practice accepting and rejecting invitations. This includes students getting the chance to create their own invitation and invite students to activities.  Students will learn more about activities, parties, times, and dates in Spanish. Students will also learn how to politely accept and reject invitations. Students will also learn how to ask questions about specific information relating to parties and events.

Warm-up

1. Tell the students: 

     “I am going to invite you to a party but you don't want to go, how are you going to respond?” Write the word “NO” on the board. The students should make a cloud of ideas and write them on the
      board. After, do the same with the word “YES”
              Voy a invitarte a una fiesta, pero no quieres ir, ¿Cómo vas a responder?
              Si quieres ir, ¿cómo vas a responder? Vamos a hacer una lista de ideas de maneras diferentes para aceptar o rechazar una invitación.

2. Distribute the invitations to the students. 
       Tengo unas invitaciones para unos eventos para ustedes.
3. Using one invitation, invite the students to model what they will do. 
        Ahora voy a mostrarles cómo invitar a un amigo o una amiga a un evento. Después de escuchar a mi invitación, tienen que hablar con un compañero o una compañera y decidir si                            ustedes quieren aceptar o rechazar mi invitación.
4. Now, ask the students who wants to accept the invitation and who wants to reject the invitation. (Note: You can ask them to state why or why not they want to accept the invitation)
        ¿Levanten la mano si quieren aceptar mi invitación? ¿Levanten la mano si quieren rechazar mi invitación?

Main Activity

1. Each student is going to choose an invitation template that they like and plan to propose the activity to their friends. 
2. Tell the students the following: 
     You will have five minutes to create a proposition for a fun activity. You are going to use the invitations on the table, but you have to fill out all the information. 
     Van a tener cinco minutos para crear una invitación para una actividad divertida. Van a usar las invitaciones que tengo, pero tienen que llenar la información.

3. The students will then walk around the room and take turns inviting another person.
     Ahora ustedes van a caminar sobre la sala y invitar a otras personas en la clase
4. Students should accept or reject the invitation. 
     Cada persona debe aceptar o rechazar la invitación
5. Students need to ask questions like, who, what, where, when, how much, what should I bring.
     Deben hacer preguntas sobre ¿cómo, qué, cuándo, dónde, cuánto, y qué debo traer?
6. They will then explain why or why not they want to go to the individual inviting them. 
     Tienen que explicar por qué sí o por qué no quieren ir.

Wrap-up

Ask some of the following questions to finish the lab: 

¿Cuál es tu pasatiempo favorito?
¿Prefieres ir a un concierto o una obra de teatro?
¿Cuál es tu deporte favorito para ver?
¿Haces invitaciones con papel o usando alguna tecnología?
