Pastimes

Theme: Pastimes, Preferences

Description: In this activity the students are going to talk about their hobbies and what they like to do in their free time. They will have an opportunity to talk to other students in a "speed dating" type which will give each student the opportunity to meet someone new and also use their language tools to converse.  

Relevant Can-Do Statements:

  • I can say which sports I like and don't like
  • I can talk about what I do on the weekends
  • I can list my favorite free time activities and those I don't like

Materiales Needed

Pastime Cards: 3 questions per card tied to a theme . Try to incorporate vocab from Chapter 4. Let's aim for 15-20 cards. (Print & Laminate)

Warm-up

1. Share two or three of your interests and a few of your hobbies. After you share these with the group, ask them to share their interests and hobbies. 

"Today we are going to share pastimes. Pastimes are things that you like to do on your free time. For example, read, sleep, play videogames, watch the television, etc. Each student is going to share two to three pastimes. Ask a question based on the phrases above. "

Example: I like to read books like Harry Potter. My favorite book is the Sorcerer StoneAnd you? What do you like to do on your free time?

Main Activity

  1. Divide the students into 2 groups by counting them off by 2s.

"Example: Madison is 1, Blake is 2, Ashley is 1, Cece is 2...."

2. Group number 1 will stay sitting and group number 2 will be  traveling around the room to talk to different people. Someone from group 1 should be paired with someone from group 2.  

3. Students should be set up like “Speed Dating”, one in front of another. 

4. Each pair will have their own set of activity cards. 

5. They will introduce themselves and then draw a card to be the topic of their conversation. 

6. They should ask each other questions about the subject and have casual conversation for 2-3 minutes. 

a. If they need to switch cards over these 3 minutes, they can do so 

7. People in traveling group will then stand and move to a new partner in the sitting group.

8. The new pairs will repeat steps 5-7 until there are no new pairs to be made.

  • "What activities are popular at Boise State? Do you participate in a club or sport?"
  • "What is something new that you can share about your partners?"
  • "In the morning, what activities do you practice?"
  • "At noon, what activities do you practice?"
  • "At night, what activities do you practice?"
  • "What is your favorite film or series?"
  • "What is your favorite online store to buy things?"
  • "What do you like to do when you don't have homework?"
  • "What is your favorite app between Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat y Twitter?"
  • "What is your favorite Snapchat filter?"

End of lab: Can-Do statement check-in... “Where are we?”

  • Read can-do statements and have students evaluate their confidence with cards 
  • Encourage students to be honest in their self evaluation
  • Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future labs!
