Duration:

Indiana Standard:

SS8 8.1.2, 8.1.3, 8.1.4, 8.1.9

Objective:

Students will be able to infer arguments both for and against the Colonies going to war and not going to war with Great Britain based on this clip from the movie “The Patriot.”

Procedure:

  1. Explain to students that going to war with the British was not by any stretch a guaranteed thing and that there were several arguments both for and against this.
  2. Show the clip (linked above) from the movie “The Patriot.”
  3. After the clip, ask students to list 4 reasons to both go to war and not go to war.  This will force students to infer at least a couple of reasons as the dialogue from the clip does not explicitly state 4 reasons for each.
  4. Take a few minutes to the rest of the class period to discuss these reasons.

Product or Assessment:

A list of reasons to both go to war and not go to war.

Accommodations:

The number of reasons could be extended or contracted to suit the ability of students.
