Careers:  Matching Personal Values to Your Career Choice

Grade Level: 9

Duration:  1 - 50 minute period

Indiana Standard:

PCC-1.2 Analyze personal aptitudes, traits, interests, attitudes, and skills

Objective:

 Student will connect their own personal values to the career of their choice.

Essential Question:

 What information have I gathered to support my conclusion that my identified personal values are compatible and present with the career of my choice?

Procedure:

  1. From a previous lesson each student will compile the four personal values of greatest importance to them in the work environment.   Discussion will ensue to determine that these personal values are realistic in today’s work environment.
  2. Each student will be given the task of supporting that their identified personal values are compatible and existent in their chosen career by providing the following:
  1.  Evidence from personal interviews with professionals in their chosen career (complete two by phone, facetime, in person, etc.)
  2.  Evidence from career resources in their chosen career (research two reputable sources),   https://www.careerinfonet.org/crl/library.aspx, https://www.bls.gov/ooh/, https://www.onetonline.org/, or other sites approved by the teacher

      3.  Students will use Easel.ly to chart their findings (A and B) above.  On this app they will

           make a determining final statement as to whether the career can accommodate their

           personal values.

Product or Assessment:  Results of their finding organized on Easel.ly.

Accommodations: Students may determine another way of supporting their identified personal values existent in their chosen career other than A or B above.

Enrichment: Determine other career choices that accommodate their personal values.  Prioritize their personal values in the event some cannot be met.  What will their investment be in this career if those values aren’t met?
