Indiana Standard:

Counseling Competencies: Social/Emotional Development

Competency 1: Students will acquire and further develop the knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others.

Competency 2: Students develop personal management and collaborative skills needed to become successful learners, responsible citizens, and productive workers.

Competency 3: Students will understand personal safety skills.

Objective:

  1. Students will understand what it means to be appreciative and optimistic.
  2. Students will understand that the key to being optimistic is positive self talk.
  3. Students will complete an activity in which they will share self talk stories. Students will be able to distinguish between positive and negative self talk.

Procedure:

  1. The teacher will deliver the Google document titled Appreciative & Optimistic to students. Students will watch the videos and read the text.
  2. The teacher will use the Google document titled Appreciative & Optimistic Discussion & Activity in order to hold a class discussion. Next, the teacher will choose an activity. If “Rolling” is chosen, students will need to pick some pieces of toilet paper and write one thought on each piece. Then students will share their self talk stories from the toilet paper. Be sure to continue to discuss that positive self talk is the key to optimism!

Accommodations:

  1. You could have each student get a certain number of toilet paper pieces to keep the discussion a bit more fair as far as share time is concerned.

Enrichment:

  1. A student or the teacher could share a common school or home scenario, then students could volunteer some self talk stories. The stories could be categorized into positive and negative self talk stories.
