USH 9.3 - Identify multiple causes of historical actions and analyze cause/effect relationships

Objective:

Students will be able to analyze historical images and use that analysis to organize them into the appropriate timeline of events.

Procedure:

  1. Ask students to divide into groups (or assign groups)
  2. Explain the importance of images to history and that to start understanding the events of the second World War, the class will be playing a game
  3. Ask students to find 3 images prior to the United States’ entry into the war and 7 images during the war
  4. Students will need to label each image A through J (Students should randomize the order of the images before labeling)
  5. On a separate sheet of paper, students will identify their images by year, place, and one sentence on its significance to the war
  6. Students will then trade their images with another group, their task will be to correctly identify the significance of the image and put them in the correct chronological order

Product or Assessment:

Can range from students simply putting the images provided in the correct order and verbally explaining their reasoning to having students write their reasoning in the form a formal essay.

Accommodations:

Names of the events or location depicted in the images can be provided to help provide students with the scaffolding needed to complete the activity.
