Recorded webinar session from October 12, 2016, presented as a professional learning component to STEM teacher and school librarian participants of the IMLS funded School Librarians Advancing STEM Learning (#SLASL 2016) project.

Webinar #5:

Webinar 5: K-12 Fellows Reflect on Student Work & Feedback 10.12.16

Webinar Chat Session:

16:05:20     From kevinlavigne : friendly critique
16:05:26     From Kevin Munroe : reflection mostly
16:05:56     From Katie : I think everyone has different expertise and it is nice to have someone look with fresh perspective.
16:06:10     From pamelaharland : it was nice knowing other people were reading through our units. It made the work more authentic.
16:06:25     From Jessica : makes me think about my own work
16:06:30     From helen.brock : I hope that my comments were helpful and will improve the final product.
16:06:51     From Sarah Hale : Because everyone had been through the same process of creating a unit, the feeback felt very honest, constructive, and conversational.
16:07:14     From Lisa Petrie : The webinar before we gave feedback was instructive. It was helpful to know that there "best practice" when giving feedback -- that we should be helpful, kind and clear.
16:07:25     From j_zaffers : definitely will address feedback suggestions in final iteration
16:08:49     From Rebecca Hanna : I appreciate the input from others
16:09:43     From Katie : It helps to see where the lesson may have needed more depth of teaching
16:09:53     From j_zaffers : It allows me to see if my lesson was on the mark
16:09:59     From helen.brock : Were goals clear and did they succeed with meeting the standards and SLOs.
16:10:02     From kjoseph : It is nice to "slow down" enough to really look at how students respoded to our instruction
16:10:20     From Sarah Hale : No matter how we well we feel we instruct, the proof (and truth) will come from the students.
16:10:24     From Kevin Munroe : I think mostly of formative assessment.
16:10:46     From kjoseph : It shows us where we need to focus
16:10:47     From Marlene : I can't hear the speaker... what are we doing?
16:10:54     From Jessica : To see how the students are putting skills into practice
16:11:00     From Rebecca Hanna : It shows where the unit my need to be refined for the student to understand
16:11:05     From pamelaharland : It’s great to look back on the assessments we gave
16:11:09     From kjoseph : To see how students respond to each other
16:11:12     From Lisa Petrie : I'm curious to see if we were too ambitious -- if kids internalized all the info in the lessons and will be able to construct new meaning from it.
16:11:15     From Katie : talking about the value of reflecting on student work
16:11:37     From Marlene : why we reflect on student work?
16:11:41     From helen.brock : Our schedule was really tight and may need more time to really have them be successful.
16:12:03     From kjoseph : I like what Lisa said
16:12:05     From Marlene : To see if we hit our learning targets
16:12:34     From kjoseph : Teacher and students both need to have the opportunity to reflect
16:14:26     From kjoseph : Would student reflection be included?
16:14:51     From Amee Godwin : Clarification - Both the teacher and LMS respond on #13 of the template
16:15:24     From kjoseph : b. not having enough formative feedback
16:18:29     From kevinlavigne : the student work and experience reinforces the “Why I am working this activity” and team teaching into my teaching and year
16:18:35     From kjoseph : I wish we had thought about building more discussion time in so that students would have peer feedback as part of their final product
16:19:02     From Katie : I thought the student work was good but could have demonstrated deeper student thinking and discovery if we had more time
16:19:29     From helen.brock : Need to review work with teacher to make sure their work met her expectations with the math standards. We will be sharing one or more of their presentations and let them know to go back and check their work and add necessary units, etc. so that others will understand their work fully.
16:19:36     From Lisa Petrie : Our students are just beginning the final project, so we are not done here. But we did a mini-lesson recently, and are pleased that they really do seem to benefit from the collaboration. The kids in an upper-level physics class really seem to appreciate that I am there to reinforce information literacy skills.
16:19:58     From kjoseph : Strengths were our enthusiasm and positivity with each other and with the planning
16:20:25     From kjoseph : Thank you for saying that Joanna
16:20:37     From j_zaffers : I never feel as if we have enough time with students to make work like this pay off as much as it could
16:21:01     From Marlene : I liked how Robin and I were able to observe in the classroom as the other taught.  It helped to see who was engaged, who needed more help, etc.
16:21:12     From kjoseph : Good point about co-assessing. Calibrating is such a valuable experience
16:21:33     From Rebecca Hanna : The students were very engaged with their final products. Some ran out of time and wanted to finish.
16:21:39     From Jessica : I’m interested in seeing how student work on our project will change the next time we do this project, as we are going to introduce some of the skills and ideas in the fall and our project will then reinforce those skills. I wonder how that will change students understanding and final projects.
16:21:57     From j_zaffers : true that
16:22:04     From kjoseph : hahahahha   Jill
16:22:33     From kjoseph : I love the idea of building skills first!
16:23:07     From Lisa Petrie : I am pleased that the kids feel that our unit resulted in authentic learning. We do have somewhat of an energy crisis in New Hampshire. I think the kids like the idea of thinking about how they can solve that problem. It brings real meaning to their work.
16:23:12     From kjoseph : I was so nervous at first
16:23:26     From kjoseph : After reading everyone's feedback I no longer felt alone
16:24:02     From Joanna Schimizzi : Kelley - you rock! Thanks for being so candid!
16:26:42     From kjoseph : Thank you Katie for teaching me about Twitter  :)
16:27:28     From Katie : Anytime, Kelley! You are a natural!
16:28:07     From kjoseph : Ummmmmmm   don't know about that
16:28:15     From Lisa Petrie : I've encouraged colleagues to contribute to OER Commons. It's okay if they use the template, right...?
16:28:31     From kjoseph : I have also recommended this
16:28:35     From Katie : Me too
16:28:35     From kjoseph : just yesterday!
16:29:12     From Marlene : I'm curious if other groups are getting preapproval before publishing their outreach in the papers? Preapproval from building administrators...
16:29:50     From kjoseph : I agree
16:30:13     From Lisa Petrie : My adminstrator loved that we submitted to a local paper. It is great PR for STEM in our school! :-)
16:30:19     From kjoseph : YES
16:30:33     From Marlene : I'm sorry I cannot understand... the video is no longer on your face, so I cannot read your speech.
16:30:48     From Joanna Schimizzi : Marlene — I’ll send ya an email
