Anecdotes to Scaffold Narrative Writing

Anecdotes

Rationale and Common Core Alignment

Writing short anecdotes provides an excellent way for students to begin writing in a narrative style. Common Core standards in grades 9-12 require narrative writing. Middle school students need more scaffolding in accessing this type of writing.  Anecdotes provide this by helping students to:

    • hone in on details
    • engage and orient  the reader by establishing a specific context
    • use small pieces of dialogue
    • provide an immediate conclusion that reflects on event
    • sensory language
    • organize an event sequentially
