OpenStax Mission

OpenStax is part of Rice University which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable corporation, and it’s our mission to improve student access to education. Our first open source college textbook was published in 2012 and has since scaled to 41 books used by millions of students across the globe. Our adaptive learning technology, designed to improve learning outcomes through personalized educational paths, are currently being piloted for K-12 and college. The OpenStax mission is made possible through the generous support of philanthropic foundations. Through these partnerships and our alliance with other educational resource companies, OpenStax is breaking down the most common barriers to learning and empowering students and instructors to succeed.

Help us develop our OER Community Hub

May 31, 2017, 11:34 a.m.

Welcome to our Community Hub – we really appreciate your support! As an early adopter of our Hub, you can help us cultivate and expand this collection of community-sourced, open resources. Here are some ways you can help our Hub grow:

  • Start fruitful conversation about OER by adding a discussion question to a book group. It could be anything you’re interested in discussing relating to OER and/or the OpenStax text – resources or homework providers that complement the text best, ways to take full advantage of OERs, etc.

  • Use your expertise by answering a question in a discussion post.

  • Spread the word by sharing the Hub with your colleagues and professional organizations.

  • Send us your ideas and suggestions about how to make the Hub better at skb3@rice.edu.

Do at least one of these things before you go on vacation this summer! Thanks again for being a part of our community, and for helping us spread the OER movement.

(1) Join a group

To get started, join one of the working groups below. In groups, you can meet peers who are creating and collaborating on resources that compliment the OpenStax textbooks. Together you can share content, provide one another feedback, and collaborate on new material.

(2) Submit content

Create new content or upload your own using ISKME's Open Author tools. Open Author allows you to create shareable, remixable versions of resources, which can be copyrighted according to your specifications and made available to the community. Tutorials and help content about Open Author are provided in the videos and tool box below.

(3) Share with others

Once published, your content will be reviewed by the OpenStax team, added to our public collections, and shared with the OpenStax community on OER Commons and through our home site, OpenStax.org.
