This course will covers a basic understanding and appreciation of energy efficiency and environmental concepts, basic operating principles of day-to-day energy conversion devices, various options to increase energy efficiency, ways to save energy and money, and ways to save the environment.
EARTH 105 investigates the interrelationships between geology, hydrology, land use and human development in several areas of Africa. We focus primarily on regions north of the equator, although there is a brife segment on South African mining. Specific topics include the Nile River (sources of the Nile, agricultural practices, effects of damming the Nile, and hydropolitics), the Sahara and Sahel (salt mines, climate change, drought, and wather resources), and natural resources and their role in politics (gold, diamonds, oil, and gas). The theme of climate change cuts across the entire semester. The quantitative and analytical components of the course involve working through a combination of map exercises and data manipulations (flood stage, groundwater age, rainfall, and temperature records). Readings for the course come from the popular scientific literature, current refereed journals, and transcribed oral histories of African people. In addition to those external reading assignments, students read online "lecture" materials and engage in weekly learning activities (some of which are submitted for a grade, while others are for self-practice). Students also engage in weekly online, asynchronous class discussions.
Our four goals for the course are: 1) To help you become better-informed citizens on topics that may affect you in the future such as: groundwater pollution, biodiversity, volcanic hazards, etc., 2) To demonstrate what is and is not believable about science--those subjects on which scientists are usually correct versus those on which scientists have no special expertise., 3) To give you enough geological background that you will get more out of your next visit to a national park, and 4) To show you enough beautiful places that you can’t wait to go out and visit some of them.
This course in Land Restoration and Afforestation provides an introduction and overview of the scientific concepts underlying deforested lands and their renewal. The course contains questions for peer-directed learning and is supplemented with bibliographies and multimedia resources . To date, this material has been used for various forms of intellectual enrichment, e.g., suggested readings, class presentations, a source of topics for term papers. The Microbial Biorealm is an informational site about microbes written by students for students. Hosted by Kenyon College, the site includes molecular and taxonomic information about microbes from all three domains of life. A comprehensive table lists the properties and characteristics of each domain of life while taxonomy pages list classification, description, significance, genome structure, cell structure, metabolism, ecology, isolation, cultivation, and references specific to individual taxa. Educators: You may assign MicrobeWiki page creation and editing as projects for your students.
Upon completion of this WebQuest, the young learner (3rd, 4th or 5th grade) will understand the basics of running a small Farm Stand business. Operations involved: Selecting the produce to be sold after product and pricing research. Calculating total sales. Substracting the expenses set by the WebQuest for their Farm Stand. Paying taxes based on their sales. Meeting savings, and charitable donation goals. Learners will experience how different decisions can affect results. They will be asked to think about the reasoning behind their choices.
The Web-based Inquiry Science Environment (WISE) is a free on-line science learning environment for students in grades 4-12. In WISE, students work on exciting inquiry projects on topics such as genetically modified foods, earthquake prediction, and the deformed frogs mystery. Students learn about and respond to contemporary scientific controversies through designing, debating, and critiquing solutions, all via the internet. Curriculum projects are complete and ready to use in the classroom. The projects are designed to meet standards and complement existing science curricula. The Teacher Area lets instructors explore new projects and grade students' work on the web, as well as to collaborate with other teachers and researchers.
