- Abstract:
Most classroom teachers work hard planning lessons, choosing materials, teaching classes, working with individual students, and assessing student progress. Yet some schools and teachers seem to be more successful than others. What makes the difference? This booklet is designed for middle and high school teachers and administrators who wish to improve their English programs. Guidelines for Teaching Middle and High School Students to Read and Write Well draw upon a series of research reports and case studies that share findings based on research in 25 schools in 4 states. The guidelines included in this booklet draw from a five-year study being conducted by Dr. Judith A. Langer, director of the National Research Center on English Learning & Achievement. She and a team of researchers have been investigating English programs in 44 classrooms in 25 schools in 4 states. By comparing typical programs with those that get outstanding results, Langer and colleagues have been able to identify the features of the more effective programs.
