Short Description:
English Language Learners Bring You the World is an annual publication of writings by the students in the English as a Second Language and Intensive English programs at South Puget Sound Community College. In it, you will find paragraphs of a few sentences by beginning writers as well as longer essays from our most advanced classes. Regardless of length, each piece offers a window into the writer's unique perspective on culture, language, and life as an immigrant.

Long Description:
Since the year 2000, English language learners at SPSCC have shared their writings in this annual digest. After a two-year hiatus during the global COVID-19 pandemic, in a time of many challenges, it is with joy that we renew our publication of English Language Learners Bring You the World.

This year, over 70 students from 37 countries have shared their stories and essays. The contributions are organized alphabetically by country of origin. Student biographies are listed in an About the Authors section at the end of the book. Although the students in the English as a Second Language and Intensive English programs at South Puget Sound Community College come from all over the world, their common experiences and dedication to learning English bring them together. As teachers, we are honored to have students who are so caring and so interested in learning. We hope you draw as much inspiration from reading their stories as we have.

 This Remote Learning Plan was created by Rosa Zimmerman in collaboration with Nick Ziegler as part of the 2019-20 ESU-NDE Digital Age Pedagogy Project. Educators worked with coaches to create Remote Learning Plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The attached Remote Learning Plan is designed for a grade 9-12 World Languages student.  Students will:  learn the parts of the house and create their "Dream House" as a "mini project.

The Monster Book remains a collection of over 150 activities intended to liven up the language classroom, engage students in learning, and give instructors straightforward, active options for practicing the four skills and tapping into other elements of language such as grammar, vocabulary, critical thinking, and culture.

CARLA's Social Justice in Language Education project is creating instructional materials that address a wide range of social justice topics in ten languages. Grounded in multiliteracies pedagogy, these materials will improve students' language abilities, intercultural understanding, and career competencies through critical engagement with target language texts.

The Social Justice in Language Education website currently includes the following:
--Social Justice Bibliography: provides a curated list of resources in three main categories--general social justice resources; social justice and language education; and language-specific resources.
--Social Justice and Language Education Presentations: includes recordings of a webinar highlighting the intersection of language and social justice and another webinar that describes the process of developing research-based curricular unit and lesson plan templates that support language instructors in the teaching of social justice themes.

Grade 2: Module 3 of the EL Education K-8 Language Arts Curriculum. In this module, students build their literacy and social-emotional skills through the analysis of literary and informational texts, as they engage in a study of pollination and pollinators. The Center for Advanced Language Proficiency Education and Research (CALPER) at the University of Pennsylvania is one of the fifteen Language Resource Centers established under Title VI of the U.S. Department of Education. According to the website, CALPER's particular focus is to improve the environment of advanced-level foreign language teaching and learning and assessment. The center thus far has developed innovative teaching materials, created online professional development resources, offered workshops for educators, and more.

This is a company that teaches the Lebanese language; it is argued here that it is not in fact a dialect of Arabic but a separate language. Publications forthcoming in 2013 are Lebanese at a Glance Phrasebook and CD, and 2000 Lebanese Verb Conjugations. There are also future plans to teach the Lebanese language online; currently all 101 materials are available as downloadable PDFs. Also available is a Lebanese-English-Lebanese dictionary, numbers, pronouns, and more.

Iowa State University's Languages and Cultures for the Professions (LCP) program allows students to pursue a professional track degree—in the College of Business, the College of Agriculture, or the College of Engineering—while at the same time pursuing a second major in their chosen language in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (within the Department of World Languages and Cultures). But, it’s not just a language that students enrolled in this program are learning. LCP students are gaining the skills to be successful cultural entrepreneurs; they are not only able to communicate in a second language, but they become culturally competent and develop the skills to succeed in multicultural and multilingual professional settings. The volume is designed specifically for language teachers who are turning toward content-based instruction to promote content learning and language learning in their classes. Through the exploration of topics related to civic education, language teachers can help their students master English and simultaneously become more knowledgeable citizens of the world. The combination of improved language skills and increased knowledge can enhance students' studies, work, and ability to become more active and conscientious participants in their communities.

A unique perspective on the confluence of the three basic conceptual frameworks in human experience. Contains several studies, with data, of remarkable world views of disparate cultures based on their specific cultures language. The premise is that how people experience the world, then think about it, then create a language around it, alters their perception of the world in very fundamental ways. The radical notion is that thought and language, creates the circumstances of, and contribute to significantly different realities for different peoples.

The internalization and realization of this concept is significant and can possibly radically alter and change how different cultures assess their ability to, at the most basic levels, understand other cultures realities.

Asking and answering questions about what culture entails and examines the fundamental properties and intertwining nature of language and culture. This text explores linguistic relativity, lexical differences among languages and intercultural communication, including high and low contexts.

Changes to a variety of OER works were made by Manon Allard-Kropp in the Department of Language and Cultural Studies to tailor the text to fit the needs of the Languages and World View course at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. Materials from the original sources have been combined, reorganized, and added to by the current author, and any conceptual or typographical errors are the responsibility of the current author.

Numbering nearly 873 million native speakers, 178 million secondary speakers and ranking as the most widely spoken language throughout the world, despite these staggering numbers, this doesn't make studying Chinese any easier.

This guide compiles starting points for OER and freely available resources for World Languages courses and topics. This OER subject guide was created for TCC faculty and staff and reflects TCC credit, continuing education, and corrections course offerings. The purpose of this guide is to help faculty and staff more easily find and review OER in their areas so that they can make decisions about quality, accuracy, relevancy, and potential use.

"Opening the World through Journaling: Integrating Art, Science, and Language Arts" teaches children to become keen observers of the natural world by drawing and writing about the plants and animals in situ. In a set of nested exercises, students use games to gain confidence in drawing and writing as a way to gather information. Later, they employ these skills to put together a field guide, make treasure maps, and to write short stories and poems.
