This video lesson shows students that math can play a role in understanding how an infectious disease spreads and how it can be controlled. During this lesson, students will see and use both deterministic and probabilistic models and will learn by doing through role-playing exercises. The primary exercises between video segments of this lesson are class-intensive simulation games in which members of the class 'infect' each other under alternative math modeling assumptions about disease progression. Also there is an occasional class discussion and local discussion with nearby classmates.

While not a full-blown modeling problem, this task does address some aspects of modeling as described in Standard for Mathematical Practice 4. Also, students often think that time must always be the independent variable, and so may need some help understanding that one chooses the independent and dependent variable based on the way one wants to view a situation.

M 6–8 Math is a problem-based core curriculum rooted in content and practice standards to foster learning and achievement for all. Students learn by doing math, solving problems in mathematical and real-world contexts, and constructing arguments using precise language. Teachers can shift their instruction and facilitate student learning with high-leverage routines that guide them in understanding and making connections between concepts and procedures.

IM 6–8 Math lessons are designed with a focus on independent, group, and whole-class instruction. This format builds mathematical understanding and fluency for all students. Teachers will also use Warm-ups and Cool-downs to help guide lesson pacing and planning.

IM 6–8 Math, focuses on supporting teachers in the use of research-based instructional routines to successfully facilitate student learning. IM 6-8 Math, authored by Illustrative Mathematics, is highly rated by EdReports for meeting all expectations across all three review gateways. EdReports is an independent nonprofit that reviews K–12 instructional materials for focus, coherence, rigor, mathematical practices, and usability. Read the full analysis here.

This is a three-credit course which covers topics that enhance the students’ problem solving abilities, knowledge of the basic principles of probability/statistics, and guides students to master critical thinking/logic skills, geometric principles, personal finance skills. This course requires that students apply their knowledge to real-world problems. A TI-84 or comparable calculator is required. The course has four main units: Thinking Algebraically, Thinking Logically and Geometrically, Thinking Statistically, and Making Connections. This course is paired with a course in MyOpenMath which contains the instructor materials (including answer keys) and online homework system with immediate feedback. All course materials are licensed by CC-BY-SA unless otherwise noted.

Students watch a video in which a double number line is used to solve a problem about getting the right amount of protein mix. Using the double number line is an example of modeling with mathematics, which is Mathematical Practice 4.Key ConceptsA double number line shows corresponding values for two variable quantities with a constant ratio between them. Each pair of tick marks that go together shows a ratio equivalent to all of the other ratios between corresponding tick marks.Goals and Learning ObjectivesWatch an example of students using mathematics to model a relationship between quantities (MP4).Use a double number line to solve a problem.Use a double number line to deepen understanding of equivalence in the context of a relationship between quantities with a constant ratio.SWD: Some students with disabilities will benefit from a preview of the goals in each lesson. Students can highlight the critical features and/or concepts and will help them to pay close attention to salient information.

This lesson introduces the concept of a glide ratio and encourages students to use appropriate tools strategically (Mathematical Practice 5). Students use tape diagrams, double number lines, ratio tables, graphs, and equations to represent glide ratios.Key ConceptsA glide ratio for an object or an organism in flight is the ratio of forward distance to vertical distance (in the absence of power and wind). For a given object or organism that glides, this ratio has a constant value and is treated as a feature of the object or organism.Goals and Learning ObjectivesUnderstand the concept of a glide ratio.Make connections within and between different ways of representing ratios.

Philanthropy is a core value of Native American tribes in Oregon. Many tribes refer to this as the “spirit of potlatch,” which is a tradition that goes back hundreds and possibly thousands of years. In this spirit, many tribes have created charitable foundations or funds to support causes that benefit the local and surrounding communities. Collectively, tribal foundations are among the largest sources of philanthropy in Oregon. This lesson uses the mathematical practice of fractions to introduce students to Native philanthropy. Students are given a dataset and asked to perform fraction concepts and justify their choices as part of a philanthropic effort. Students will be addressing Critical Areas 1 and 2 while addressing mathematical practices.
