Abstract: This course surveys American political thought from the colonial era to the present. Required readings are drawn mainly from primary sources, including writings of politicians, activists, and theorists. Topics include the relationship between religion and politics, rights, federalism, national identity, republicanism versus liberalism, the relationship of subordinated groups to mainstream political discourse, and the role of ideas in politics. We will analyze the simultaneous radicalism and weakness of American liberalism, how the revolutionary ideas of freedom and equality run up against persistent patterns of inequality. Graduate students are expected to pursue the subject in greater depth through suggested reading and individual research.
Abstract: The UCCP Advanced Placement (AP) US Government and Politics course is a one semester survey of American Government and Politics covering the Constitution, political beliefs, political parties, interest groups, institutions of government, public policy and civil rights. Emphasis is placed on critical and evaluative thinking skills, essay writing, and interpretation of original documents. This curriculum covers all of the material outlined by the College Board as necessary to prepare you to pass the US Government and Politics exam.
Abstract: This is a searchable database of the cornerstone documents of our government. It has more than 100,000 digitized copies of the National Archives most popular and significant manuscripts, photographs, maps, drawings and other documents. The guide introduces educators and students to the National Archives' ARC. Searching in ARC to learn more about National Archives' historical documents could enrich a classroom activity, a homework assignment, or a research project.
Abstract: In this lesson, students work in groups and individually to understand how the Constitution/Bill of Rights is a living document and how Supreme Court decisions protect the rights of all Americans.

Abstract: Students will learn about the electoral process and its Social Sciences through reading, research, and discussion. They will then convene a constitutional convention to debate altering this process.
Abstract: Analyzes Russia's social, cultural, political heritage; Eurasian imperialism; and autocracy. Compares reforming and revolutionary impulses in the context of serfdom, the rise of the intelligentsia, and debates over capitalism. Focuses on historical and literary texts, and especially the intersections between the two.

Abstract: Most socially significant issues from America's past were brought before the nation's courts. Subject introduces the themes and events of American law since 1787, focusing on three recurring themes in American public life: liberty, equality, and property. Readings consist mostly of original court cases, especially from the US Supreme Court. Subject also focuses on the historical connections between cases and broader social, political, and cultural trends.
Abstract: In fighting today's 'war on terror', how do the new post-9/11 national security laws, executive orders and policies infringe on our traditional freedoms of inquiry? Are they an important weapon in keeping Americans more secure? Do they benefit society and do they help keep us a free people? UCB faculty will discuss these issues in an evening that celebrates and honors the US Constitution of the 18th century.

National Security, the War on Terror, and the Constitution: A Forum
A campus wide forum held in honor of Constitution Day and the 5th anniversary of the Terrorist Attack on the World Trade Center.
In the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001, the United States quickly responded with a wide range of statutes, executive orders and public policy statements reflecting the perceived need for more effective information gathering, as well as new understandings of traditional constitutional concerns.
This forum will look at a wide range of statutes, and public policy positions taken by Congress, and the President during the past five years. These range from privacy concerns and the use of electronic surveillance; the status of combatants and non-combatant collaborators; the treatment of military prisoners in the United States and in Guantanamo; interrogation techniques; and the applicability of international treaties. The Forum will bring together a wide range of constitutional scholars, historians and political scientists, to consider, evaluate and debate the impact 9/11 has had, and continues to have on the American Constitution.
