Hector Mendiola, a retired pediatrician from Mexico City, who was living in Utah, noticed that many of the children of migrant workers were illiterate in their native tongue and so he developed, along with Fred Berthong, a local community volunteer, a computer assisted program to help Hispanic youth who were illiterate in their native language to learn to read and write in Spanish. The CALFNES program (Computer Assisted Language For Non English Speakers), which they created, and is now in the public school system, got the attention of the Mexican Federal Government, which in turn has led to recognition and connections with other federal officials and private businesses who provide educational programs to Mexicans living abroad. Other successes then followed Dr. Mendiola's success.

The Catalogue of Digitized Medieval Manuscripts seeks to provide a technological solution to a simple and rather delightful "problem": the breathtaking increase in the number of medieval manuscripts available on the web in their entirety, but in a bewildering range of venues and formats.
Chain Stories is for young native speakers of a Romance language who have only recently started to learn a foreign language at school.
What This highly successful, collaborative project asks students in five schools, each of which speak a different Romance language, to write a story together, each school in their native language.
How The students 'Intercomprehend' the other chapters written by the Chain partners, using the similarities between the Romance languages, and write their own part of the story.
Result The effect on students has been dramatic with an excellent raising of awareness and interest in learning languages.
Take Part The project has created an online website were teachers can form their own Chains of five schools. There they will find all the necessary guides, instructions and communication tools, to allow them to complete a Chain story autonomously.
Exploring our use and relationship with water: This unit explores the relationship between people (individuals and populations) and water across the world. The lessons begin at a personal level, inviting students to think about how much water they use and how they could conserve water. The unit broadens to national and international/multicultural issues and perspectives as students compare how much water people use in different parts of the world and contemplate why there is such a wide gap.
Chinese Take-In provides an interactive environment where first-year Chinese learners can practice listening outside the classroom according to individual needs and paces while receiving immediate feedback.
The Portuguese language lessons of ClicaBrasil highlight aspects of Brazilian culture. They are designed for intermediate to advanced students, but are accessible to everyone. This course introduces students to the language of Haitian Kreyòl, or Creole, and to the culture of its speakers. The course is intended for students with no prior knowledge of the language and will develop both reading and writing skills--emphasizing communicative competence as well as grammatical and phonetic techniques. Importantly, this study of Kreyòl explores the language's social and cultural elements, as seen in Haiti and elsewhere in the Caribbean. The course includes an anthropological survey of Haitian history, economy, politics and religion. In addition to class work, music and film combine for a multilateral approach to language development. The program is designed to meet the needs of those who plan to conduct research in Haiti or in the Haitian diaspora, or who intend to work in a volunteer or professional capacity either in Haiti or with Haitians abroad.
Cultura is a Web-based, intercultural project situated in a language class, that connects American students with other students in different countries. It was originally created as an exchange between American and French students. Cultura has since been adapted to other schools and languages, connecting students in the US with students in Germany, Italy, Mexico, Russia and Spain. Following a common calendar, students explore together a variety of materials that progressively broaden their scope of inquiry.
