This module explains the details of the Connexions Authoring system.
Since you are reading this, you are, or are about to become, a tutor (n.). Congratulations. This is an achievement, and one which you can use to extend yourself as well as to make a real difference to the lives of fellow students. To tutor (v.) gives you an opportunity to really get to grips with your own understanding of your discipline, and to help others discover their understanding. Experience and understanding gained in tutoring can help you in your post-university career as you lead teams or support development opportunities in the workplace.
Think about it: tutorials are a part of every student’s experience. Think back on the ones you have attended.
No, seriously – think back.
What was the worst tutorial you ever attended? What was the best? What made them so? How did they (and others like them or others that were just 'okay') affect your experience of being a student?
Tutorials can make a difference. Not all of that is the tutor’s responsibility – the students, the lecturer, the administration staff, the maintenance and technical staff, they all play a role; but as tutor you can create the opportunities and the space for students to engage with ideas, concepts and information in such a way that they (and you) will come to know things differently.
This guide won't make the difference – you will.

This Learning to Teach Online case study aims to demonstrate how the effective use of simple 'just in time' style online tutorials, stringently prepared and designed to support the needs of the students, can positively impact student learning when used in conjunction with traditional teaching approaches. Stephanie Eckoldt and Dominic Alder from the University of Bristol examine the reasons why they adopted an online supported teaching approach, and discuss key considerations in the planning and use of online tutorials. It is hoped that teachers in a wide range of different disciplines will be able to relate how the use of online tutorials would be of benefit to their own students' learning. Any teachers or students studying medicine and surgery are freely able to access and use the Hippocrates online tutorials.
Provides a hands-on introduction to the resources for designing and fabricating smart systems, including CAD/CAM/CAE; NC machining, 3-D printing, injection molding, laser cutting; PCB layout and fabrication; sensors and actuators; analog instrumentation; embedded digital processing; wired and wireless communications. Emphasis on learning how to use the tools as well as understand how they work.
This case study examines the use and benefits of online user generated self-assessment learning objects in Medicine. Two medical students from the University of Bristol developed a free online website called Medicles, which allows medical students from all over the world to develop and share mini-tutorials on a wide range of topic areas. This case study examines how the Medicles system works, and discusses the benefits that user generated learning resources can offer.

This course examines the issues, principles, and challenges toward building relational machines through a combination of studio-style design and critique along with lecture, lively discussion of course readings, and assignments. Insights from social psychology, human-computer interaction, and design will be examined, as well as how these ideas are manifest in a broad range of applications for software agents and robots.
The underpinning pedagogical idea is that architectural technology is part of this hierarchical framework: conceptualising (architectural concept)-structuring (structural system)-placement and layering (components)-detailing (connections). The projects presented here demonstrate that in this framework, students can acquire competencies that enable them to inextricably interlink architectural technology to the entire building and its spatial-aesthetics.

When teaching larger classes, an online environment can provide many opportunities for increased student engagement, group work and self testing. In this case study Professor Alan Crosky, from the University of New South Wales, explains how he uses a blended learning approach in his Engineering Materials and Chemistry course with 700 first year students. He highlights the importance of providing student orientation and support when first introducing an online component, and discusses the benefits of integrating online tutorials and resources, group work, peer assessment and self-testing into the course.
