African American youth and education in Boston. Program consists of numerous community affairs segments, the most prominent of which is a panel discussion directed by Sarah-Ann Shaw on African American youth and education in Boston. Guests include Jean McGuire (Roxbury resident and only Black Pupil Adjustment Counselor for the Boston public school system), Gerald Hill (an African American teacher and nominee for Interim Project Director of the King-Timilty Coalition), Francine Mills (director of a vocational program for Operation Exodus), John Jackson (an African American teacher involved with experimental work-study program of Boston public schools), and Patricia Raynor (parent and member of the Parents' Education Committee). Brigham Hospital) and Henrietta Aladjem (author of the book, The Sun Is My Enemy) on the disease lupus, two studio performances by Stanton Davis and the Ghetto Mysticism Band (who perform 'Funkified Tofu' and 'Crescent Gypsies'), an 'Open Platform' debate moderated by Melvin Moore on whether or not Massachusetts should fund Medicaid abortions (with debaters Dr. Mildred Jefferson, President of the both the Massachusetts and the National Right to Life committees, and Niki Nichols Gamble, Executive Director of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, and panel reporters James Drummey, news editor of Review of The News magazine and Susan Sprecher of WBCN Radio), the 'Say Brother News' with Karen Holmes, Margaret Tarter, Leah Fletcher, Eric Sampedro, and Tanya Hart, and the 'Community Calendar.' E.L. Jones performs Othello. Program consists of a special presentation of The Face of Love, a one-man musical theater piece starring E.L. James. The Face of Love reflects on the various kinds of love individuals can feel whether for people, material goods, countries, or ideas. Performance consists of short scenes (mostly) punctuated by vocal pieces, and include a construction worker's reading of Othello, the story of a homeless man, a man reflecting on the death of his aunt, a gambler talking about his love for a Spanish woman, a soldier away from home whose girlfriend breaks up with him via mail, an overzealous patriot, an immigrant in the United States to study, and an elderly man reflecting on heaven. Creation of the Mashpee District in 1685. Program focuses on the August, 1976 lawsuit filed by the Wampanoag Indians of Massachusetts against the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in an effort to reclaim lands sold from 1763 to 1870 without Congressional approval. Host Barbara Barrow speaks with guest Russell Peters, President of the Mashpee Tribal Council, about the problems the council is having regaining tribal lands, when was the lands were taken, when the council decided to file suit, how Peters feels about the claim that Wampanoag marriages with Black and white Americans has diluted their culture and claim to lands, if Mashpee becoming a town gave Native Americans the power to sell their own land (as they did willingly, according to Barrow), and what will happen to the people who are living in Mashpee who feel they own their land and houses. 'The Great Frontier' juxtaposes dramatizations of two stories. In the first, Tracy Barnes, host of the cable access show 'Oklahoma Yesterdays,' prepares for a broadcast on Bill Jenkins, a film-maker who was attempting to make 'real westerns.' This alternates with vignettes depicting the life of Bill Jenkins.

Barbara Barrows interviews Gretchen Wortham after her recent appointment to Station Manager of WILD Radio, who discusses the role of minority women in management positions and the difference in respect and responsibility accorded to White counterparts.

Eritrean People's Liberation Front. Program focuses on the struggle between Ethiopia and Eritrea, a struggle that started in 1961, when Ethiopia officially annexed Eritrea and made it a colony. Host Melvin Moore and guests Astier Woldeyohannes (of the Association of Eritrean Women of North America), Girmai Gebregziabher (of the Association of Eritrean Students of North America), and Arthur Koutsis (member of the Eritrean Support Committee) discuss the history of the struggle between Eritrea and Ethiopia, the function of the North American associations they represent, reactions to the argument that Black Africans should not be fighting other Black Africans, if the guerilla warfare is a struggle for independence or a struggle against oppression, what has been done to influence the United Nations (and the United States) not to aid Ethiopia, and is there any involvement of other African countries with the struggle. Falling standards in Boston Public Schools. Program focuses on minority cultural institutions and whether they are destined to fail in the United States. Host Barbara Barrow speaks with Elma Lewis, Director of the National Center of Afro-American Artists about the limited existence of minority cultural institutions, what institutions serve Blacks in America, if the National Center is a stable institution, the role of donations and individual giving in the economic viability of an institution, and the difficulty in getting grants (due to the fact, as Lewis states, grant monies are distributed to perpetuate a culture rather than develop marginalized populations). A Say Brother Special Film Presentation, program 312 is a public television airing of Ely Landau's 1970 documentary film 'Montgomery to Memphis.' The film, which is about Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights movement, was originally issued by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation and produced by Ely Landau with Richard Kaplan. It consists of archival newsreel and television footage assembled in chronological order. The film was nominated for an Oscar in 1970 for Best Documentary Film. In black and white. A woman, probably Segalove, narrates brief dramatizations of six anecdotal stories, each of which relates in some way to watching television. The dramatizations are humorous and mainly autobiographical, featuring performers wearing everyday clothing in everyday environments. Produced and directed by Ilene Segalove. The individual segments are as follow: The Pastrami Sandwich: A child watches the Burns and Allen show and realizes he wants a pastrami sandwich. Dial 116: A child watching television is prompted by an advertisement to call and report a nonexistent fire. Truth on TV: Driving home, a couple listens to the radio broadcast remarks of a child who reached out and caught a ball at an L.A. Dodgers game. Hotel Suite: A couple checks into a hotel. The woman is excited by the cleanliness of the room, even the television has been sanitized. Anatomy in Motion: After experiencing stomach pain, a woman is x-rayed. She drinks a barium milkshake and the nurses whisper descriptions of foods in her ear, encouraging her stomach to create juices and appear on the nearby monitor. The Forbidden Channel. The Forbidden Channel: A young girl's parent's purchase a cable television system that provides access to a pornographic channel; they forbid their daughter to watch the channel and leave for the evening; when surfing the stations, the girl performs an elaborate gymnastic tumbling pass when the forbidden channel comes up, thus averting her gaze. The Contemporary Art Television (CAT) Fund was a joint venture between Boston's Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) and WGBH's New Television Workshop. Funding came from the Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities' New Works program in 1983. Co-directors were WGBH's Susan Dowling (New Television Workshop Director, 1982-1993), and David Ross (ICA Director). Kathy Rae Huffman served as curator and producer. The Fund's primary objective was to award money to video artists for new works. The goals were to foster excellence in the exploration of television as a creative medium, broaden video arts international audience through broadcast and gallery exhibition, and increase revenues for artists from the distribution of their works in all markets. Many of the works were broadcast as part of 'New Television,' and appeared in festivals worldwide. The Fund was also used to sponsor international symposia among curators, distributors, and producers to help promote the growth of video art. In 1990, the ICA assumed full sponsorship of the Fund, where it continued for another year.

"9/23." is named after the day it was videotaped, 9/23/69. It showcases the effects of the Paik-Abe video synthesizer and manipulates "live" footage taped off a television monitor, pre-recorded footage, and images staged in the studio. These include images of well-known figures, the faces of Fred Barzyk and Olivia Tappan, and lit candles.
