Kids in the Hall of Planet Earth: Rocks in Your Cabinet

Abstract:: This Web site, part of Kids in the Hall of Planet Earth, provides an interactive way to learn about the rocks and minerals found in everyday objects. Here, kids start with a clickable kitchen scene. There are more than 20 items to examine – everything from cereal and salt to porcelain plates and copper pots. For each item, students are taken to an information screen that explains the rock or mineral and how it has been used in the item.

It describes reservoir models and residence time, major ion composition of seawater, inputs to and outputs from the ocean via rivers, the atmosphere, and the sea floor. Biogeochemical cycling within the oceanic water column and sediments, emphasizing the roles played by the formation, transport, and alteration of oceanic particles and the effects that these processes have on seawater composition. Cycles of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen, and sulfur. Uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide by the ocean. Material presented through lectures and student-led presentation and discussion of recent papers."

Published in March 2004, this Earth Bulletin examines how scientists are studying oxygen's origins by tracing its footprints in ancient rocks.
