The day-to-day collaboration between the researchers in Public Health and Biostatistics at the School reveals unified topics that cut across many applications. This series of presentations introduces the topics that show empirically to be most important in these collaborations; and emphasizes concepts over details, through recent applications in Public Health.

This is an Internet-based E-Book for advanced-placement (AP) statistics educational curriculum. The E-Book is initially developed by the UCLA Statistics Online Computational Resource (SOCR), however, all statistics instructors, researchers and educators are encouraged to contribute to this effort and improve the content of these learning materials.

Does excessive exposure to violent video games cause violent behavior? Does increased gun availability cause more crime or less? Causal claims permeate everyday life and are constantly the subject of "studies" reported in the newspaper. The material in Causal and Statistical Reasoning examines the nature of causal claims and the statistical sorts of evidence used to support them. The material is contained in: approximately 20 content modules, a repository of over 100 short case studies, and a "Causality Lab" that allows students to simulate the work a social scientist does in trying to discover what causes what from data. The material is meant to be used for three related purposes. One, it is meant for students who will only take one such overview of research methods course in service of consuming the newspaper intelligently and critically. Two, it is meant for students who will take a few statistics courses in order that they have an appropriate qualitative conceptual framework within which to learn statistical ideas, and three, it is meant for students interested in the foundations of quantitative causal models: called Bayes Networks. By adjusting the set of modules, cases, and causality lab exercises covered, professors and students can tailor the experience accordingly. The OLI project teaches annual summer workshops for faculty who are interested in learning how to integrate the material into their courses.

This Electronic Statistics Textbook offers training in the understanding and application of statistics. The material was developed at the StatSoft R&D department based on many years of teaching undergraduate and graduate statistics courses and covers a wide variety of applications, including laboratory research (biomedical, agricultural, etc.), business statistics and forecasting, social science statistics and survey research, data mining, engineering and quality control applications, and many others.

Elementary Statistics is an introduction to data analysis course that makes use of graphical and numerical techniques to study patterns and departures from patterns. The student studies randomness with emphasis on understanding variation, collects information in the face of uncertainty, checks distributional assumptions, tests hypotheses, uses probability as a tool for anticipating what the distribution of data may look like under a set of assumptions, and uses appropriate statistical models to draw conclusions from data. The course introduces the student to applications in engineering, business, economics, medicine, education, the sciences, and other related fields. The use of technology (computers or graphing calculators) will be required in certain applications.

The Pelican Web & E-Journal

There is overwhelming evidence that violence is the main obstacle to sustainable development. It is also well known that there is an intrinsic link between patriarchy and violence. Therefore, mitigating
violence requires overcoming the patriarchal mindset in both secular and religious institutions.

The mission of "The Pelican Web" is to collect and analyze knowledge on patriarchy-induced obstacles to sustainable development, and to publish the free subscription, open access "E-Journal of Solidarity,
Sustainability, and Nonviolence" (JSSNV). The e-journal provides a monthly digest on current research pursuant to human solidarity, ecological sustainability, and both secular and religious non-violence.

Each issue includes links to relevant "best of the web" content. The basic philosophy of the journal is Christian, but no source of wisdom is excluded. The U.N. "Millennium Development Goals" (MDGs) are used as a point of reference.

This resource contains the complete materials (syllabus, class notes, assignments, web-based software analysis and visualization tools) for a semester-long upper-division or graduate course on mathematical modeling, statistical analysis and visualization of biomedical imaging data.

This course introduces students to the basic concepts, logic, and issues involved in statistical reasoning. Major topics include exploratory data analysis, an introduction to research methods, probability, and statistical inference. The objectives of this course are to give students confidence in manipulating and drawing conclusions from data and provide them with a critical framework for evaluating study designs and results. An important feature of the course is the use of an intelligent tutoring system developed at Carnegie Mellon called "StatTutor." StatTutor aims to facilitate understanding of statistical ideas and analytical techniques by helping students construct useful knowledge representations and thereby develop effective problem-solving skills. It uses a specified outline of steps to follow in solving problems, or "scaffolding". StatTutor will use scaffolding and immediate feedback flexibly, tracking and responding to individual students as they navigate the learning environment.
