Abstract:: Brief review of applied aerodynamics and modern approaches in aircraft stability and control. Static stability and trim. Stability derivatives and characteristic longitudinal and lateral-directional motions. Physical effects of wing, fuselage, and tail on aircraft motion. Flight vehicle stabilization by classical and modern control techniques. Time and frequency domain analysis of control system performance. Human pilot models and pilot-in-the-loop control with applications. V/STOL stability, dynamics, and control during transition from hover to forward flight. Parameter sensitivity and handling quality analysis of aircraft through variable flight conditions. Brief discussion of motion at high angles-of-attack, roll coupling, and other nonlinear flight regimes.

Physics I: Classical Mechanics, Fall 2005 8.01L

Abstract:: Introduction to classical mechanics (see description under 8.01). Material is covered over a longer interval, so that the subject is completed by the end of the Independent Activities Period. During the first month of classes, substantial emphasis is given to reviewing and strengthening pre-calculus mathematics, basic physics concepts, and problem-solving skills. Delay in the use of calculus permits students more exposure to 18.01 before the material is used in the physics. Overall content, depth, and difficulty is otherwise identical to that of 8.01. Students receive credit for 8.01 on their transcripts. Credit cannot also be received for 8.012 or 8.01X.

Abstract:: The concepts of stability and equilibrium are introduced while students learn how these ideas are related to the concept of center of mass. They gain further understanding when they see, first-hand, how equilibrium is closely related to an object's center of mass. In an associated literacy activity, students learn about motion capture technology, the importance of center of gravity in animation and how use the concept of center of gravity in writing an action scene.

Abstract:: 1.050 is a sophomore-level engineering mechanics course, commonly labeled "Statics and Strength of Materials" or "Solid Mechanics I." This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and methods of structural mechanics. Topics covered include: static equilibrium, force resultants, support conditions, analysis of determinate planar structures (beams, trusses, frames), stresses and strains in structural elements, states of stress (shear, bending, torsion), statically indeterminate systems, displacements and deformations, introduction to matrix methods, elastic stability, and approximate methods. Design exercises are used to encourage creative student initiative and systems thinking.
