Abstract:: This module examines the flags appearing in the imagery of the Souvenir of Egypt, a decorative silk that is part of the Travelers in the Middle East Archive. Here, we will search for the identity of each flag using a variety of library and online resources, demonstrating how to identify sometimes obscure images. This module is part 3 of a 6-part course on the Souvenir of Egypt.

Introduction to the "Souvenir of Egypt"

Abstract:: This six-part course explores how to understand material culture and explore political history through a series of virtual research projects centered on the decorative silk entitled the "Souvenir of Egypt." Each module comprising the course illustrates particular techniques and resources of historical research through the examination of specific aspects of the silk, namely: the texts, flags, portraits and symbols appearing in its imagery. The final module discusses how to take the facts that you've gathered through your research and craft a coherent argument about their significance.

Abstract:: This course will explore how to study material culture through a series of research questions centered on the Souvenir of Egypt, a decorative silk from the nineteenth century on which a variety of images are depicted, including texts, flags, portraits and a landscape scene. We will research and identify each of the images in the silk in order to gain an understanding of their meanings independently and in relation to one another.
