Abstract:: This site is a set of lecture notes from a petrology class by Dr. Susan DeBari at Western Washington University. The lectures explain the process of mineral crystallization and phase relationships as a function of temperature and pressure. Topics covered include the phase rule, one-component systems (unary), two-component systems (binary), and three-component systems (ternary), as well as equilibrium crystallization, equilibrium melting, fractional crystallization, and fractional melting. Diagrams and definitions are integrated into the lecture notes.

Stable Mineral Assemblages in Metamorphic Rocks

Abstract:: This 81-slide PowerPoint presentation reviews the phase rule in terms of metamorphic systems, using the brucite-periclase system as an example. Binary and ternary chemographic diagrams are used to explain compatibility in mineral assemblages. The presentation covers ternary diagrams for complicated systems, ACF and AKF diagrams, projections from apical phases, and J.B. Thompson's A(K)FM diagram is used as an alternative tool to apply to pelitic rocks. Lastly, a set of rules is laid out to help choose the appropriate chemographic diagram.
