The goal of this chapter is to plan, build, and maintain external school partnerships to foster the growth of special needs students. An emphasis will be placed on building and managing these relationships so they encourage social values and goals of the school, business and community.

The content in this module is one way to acquaint school leaders with the importance of establishing a relationship with the parents of limited English proficient students. Beginning with an orientation program that opens the doors of the school and creates an inviting atmosphere that respects diversity is one way of forging such a bond. This module offers suggestions for a framework to assist leaders in planning and implementing an initial informational meeting.

The goal of this module is to highlight the importance of building community partnerships by bringing community members and educators together in an effort to impact school and community improvement.This module focuses on the educator as facilitator in organizing a team of diverse stakeholders (students, parents, teachers, administrators, community members, and representatives of community organizations and agencies) to collaborate around the issue of student achievement.The philosophy of the Algebra Project, Inc., a math and science program originated in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1982, will be used to demonstrate how local communities can be organized to support student’s academic achievement.

School community partnerships are not just corporate sponsors anymore! School community partnerships include the entire community. Through the efforts of our building Communities In Schools Advisory Group and our entire school community, we were able to establish school partnerships that helped to build school spirit, student morale, and academic achievement; while empowering parents and students with internal and external community resources.

The content in this module will help a school system prepare and carry out a mock crisis drill involving administration, faculty, parents, students, law enforcement, emergency evacuation personnel, and defense and swat personnel. The drill is intended to test the plans that are in place for all of the involved organizations as well as a share session that will allow for expanding and improving the plans.

In the elementary years, parents are usually involved with their students’ education; volunteering at school, keeping up with homework, and communicating with teachers. When students get to the middle school level, parents seem to pull back more, especially after the sixth grade year, generally being more involved when it comes to sports and/or discipline issues rather than what is taking place in the classroom.
