"Climate change is altering our world as we know it. Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for making our environment resilient. From planners to scientists to farmers and ranchers, the lens through which climate change is viewed is dynamic. So how can anyone plan the best course of action with the best available data? Researchers led by Aavudai Anandhi at Florida A&M University might have just the right tool for the job. Their evidence-based approach combines three climate research methods to tailor action plans to the needs of a given ecosystem—whether that’s an entire country or state, or a single community, and whether for now or for the future. The approach begins with gathering evidence of climate change over a geographical region—the state of Florida for example. That’s done by pulling from trusted research to understand how factors like temperature or rainfall have evolved or are projected to evolve over time..."

"Climate change is altering our world as we know it Despite general guidelines for mitigating harmful changes Climate change affects different areas in different ways And those effects aren’t always clear Now, a new evidence-based tool could provide the resolution to tailor plans of action around the globe It starts with a meta-analysis that gathers climate change data for a given ecosystem That data provides the input needed to draw conclusions about future climate trends, or scenarios Such as increases or decreases in temperature The effects those changes are likely to set in motion are then linked together in a causal chain Which can reveal how crops, natural resources, or animal species will fare amid climate change Although the tool becomes limited when data for a given area are scarce It could be a powerful new way to develop custom-made plans for fighting climate change.."

Analysis of Biological Networks (BE.440)

This class analyzes complex biological processes from the molecular, cellular, extracellular, and organ levels of hierarchy. Emphasis is placed on the basic biochemical and biophysical principles that govern these processes. Examples of processes to be studied include chemotaxis, the fixation of nitrogen into organic biological molecules, growth factor and hormone mediated signaling cascades, and signaling cascades leading to cell death in response to DNA damage. In each case, the availability of a resource, or the presence of a stimulus, results in some biochemical pathways being turned on while others are turned off. The course examines the dynamic aspects of these processes and details how biochemical mechanistic themes impinge on molecular/cellular/tissue/organ-level functions. Chemical and quantitative views of the interplay of multiple pathways as biological networks are emphasized. Student work culminates in the preparation of a unique grant application in an area of biological networks.

This course explores the international trade in television text, considering the ways in which 'foreign' programs find places within 'domestic' schedules. Looking at the life television texts maintain outside of their home market, this course examines questions of globalization and national cultures of production and reception. Students will be introduced to a range of positions about the nature of international textual trade, including economic arguments about the structuring of international markets and ethnographic studies about the role imported content plays in the formation of hybrid national identities. Students will be encouraged to consider the role American content is made to play in non-American markets.

Students learn about human reflexes, how our bodies react to stimuli and how some body reactions and movements are controlled automatically, without thinking consciously about the movement or responses. In the associated activity, students explore how reflexes work in the human body by observing an involuntary human reflex and testing their own reaction times using dominant and non-dominant hands. Once students understand the stimulus-to-response framework components as a way to describe human reflexes and reactions in certain situations, they connect this knowledge to how robots can be programmed to conduct similar reactions.

"Nitrogen removal is a critical part of the wastewater treatment process. and one of the most efficient ways to remove nitrogen from water is anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox). Anammox is a process mediated by bacteria that — via several biochemical steps — converts ammonium to nitrogen gas. Understanding how external factors like nutrient availability impact these organisms can help us optimize and maintain these systems. A recent study found that the anammox bacterial communities are resilient to short-term starvation. The community structure changed slightly, and the bacteria increased expression of important nutrient transporters and energy metabolism genes. Expression of key genes associated with anammox reactions were also increased in response to starvation. The anammox bacteria showed fewer differences in transcriptional patterns after starvation than heterotrophs, suggesting that the anammox bacteria had greater transcriptional resilience than the heterotrophs..."
