The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to the planet Mars. This lesson will begin by discussing the location and size of Mars relative to Earth, as well as introduce many interesting facts about this red planet. Next, the history of Martian exploration is reviewed and students discover why scientists are so interested in studying this mysterious planet. The lesson concludes with students learning about future plans to visit Mars.

CHALLENGE FOUR is to translate your (and other people's) complaints and criticisms into specific requests, and explain the positive outcomes envisioned in your requests. In order to get more cooperation from others, whenever possible ask for what you want by using specific, action-oriented, positive language rather than by using generalizations, "why's," "don'ts" or "somebody should's." Help your listeners comply by explaining your requests with a "so that...", "it would help me to... if you would..." or "in order to..." Also, when you are receiving criticism and complaints from others, translate and restate the complaints as action requests.

Covers the basics of fMRI, the strengths and limitations of fMRI compared to other techniques, and the design and analysis of fMRI experiments, focusing primarily on experiments on high-level vision. Upon completion, students should be able to understand and critique published fMRI papers, have a good grasp on what is known about high-level vision from fMRI, and design their own fMRI experiments.

" We are now at an unprecedented point in the field of neuroscience: We can watch the human brain in action as it sees, thinks, decides, reads, and remembers. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is the only method that enables us to monitor local neural activity in the normal human brain in a noninvasive fashion and with good spatial resolution. A large number of far-reaching and fundamental questions about the human mind and brain can now be answered using straightforward applications of this technology. This is particularly true in the area of high-level vision, the study of how we interpret and use visual information including object recognition, mental imagery, visual attention, perceptual awareness, visually guided action, and visual memory. The goals of this course are to help students become savvy and critical readers of the current neuroimaging literature, to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the technique, and to design their own cutting-edge, theoretically motivated studies. Students will read, present to the class, and critique recently published neuroimaging articles, as well as write detailed proposals for experiments of their own. Lectures will cover the theoretical background on some of the major areas in high-level vision, as well as an overview of what fMRI has taught us and can in future teach us about each of these topics. Lectures and discussions will also cover fMRI methods and experimental design. A prior course in statistics and at least one course in perception or cognition are required."

This course examines the conceptual framework of negotiations as applied to all areas of negotiation in both the public and private sectors, focusing specifically on business negotiations later in the course. It also uncovers the influence of national and cultural variations in the decision-making process. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: demonstrate an understanding of the theory, processes, and practices of negotiation, conflict resolution, and relationship management; identify and discuss common negotiation myths and misconceptions; demonstrate an understanding of the principles, strategies, and tactics of effective negotiation and professional relationship management; identify and assess the variables in negotiations; develop reliable planning techniques; demonstrate an increased level of comfort and skill in managing negotiations as well as professional relationships; assess the importance of various factors that impact negotiations, including specific issues in question, different stakeholder positions, interests, relationships, and group dynamics; develop and execute effective negotiation strategies and tactics for different scenarios; employ effective communication, problem-solving, and influence techniques appropriate to a given situation; diagnose negotiation problems; demonstrate familiarity with new negotiation ideas and practices; explain how culture impacts negotiations; identify characteristics of culture or national identity that negotiators should become familiar with prior to engaging in cross-cultural or international negotiations; explain how TrompenaarsŐ and HofstedeŐs theories of cultural dimensions can be applied to cross-cultural and international negotiations; describe the types of political and legal issues that might arise during the course of international negotiations. This course provides an introduction to optical science with elementary engineering applications. Topics covered in geometrical optics include: ray-tracing, aberrations, lens design, apertures and stops, radiometry and photometry. Topics covered in wave optics include: basic electrodynamics, polarization, interference, wave-guiding, Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction, image formation, resolution, space-bandwidth product. Analytical and numerical tools used in optical design are emphasized. Graduate students are required to complete assignments with stronger analytical content, and an advanced design project.

Introduces students to basic properties of structural materials and behavior of simple structural elements and systems through a series of experiments. Students learn experimental technique, data collection, reduction and analysis, and presentation of results.
