This unit covers basic research methods in an easily accessible way, and includes research tips and pros and cons for each method. It also takes learners through a step-by-step approach to planning research.

In this module, we unravel the story contained in "The Egyptian Red Book," which uses cartoons and quotations from authorities to criticize the British government's handling of General Charles Gordon while under siege in Khartoum in 1884-1885. We discuss research methods used by historians, including examining the original source for key details; identifying significant words to use in catalog and index searches; using newspapers, political papers, and other Primary source materials; and comparing multiple sources to get the fullest understanding of events.

This course will introduce the student to research methodologies frequently used in the social sciences, and especially those used in the field of psychology. This course covers the basics of conducting research, touching upon statistics and their importance (although it does not require a comprehensive knowledge of the subject). The course will conclude with a section on experimental design. By the end of this course, the student should understand why research methodology is important in scientific research, be comfortable reading procedural and methodological sections of journal articles, and understand how to employ different research methods. This course intends to acquaint the student with a variety of different research techniques. In this lab course, the student will put research and experimental design concepts into practice while conducting laboratory experiments. In addition to review of concepts developed in the Research Methods lecture course, this lab will also broach a number of practical matters, including the standard organizational format for research project documentation. This course introduces students to the basic concepts, logic, and issues involved in statistical reasoning. Major topics include exploratory data analysis, an introduction to research methods, probability, and statistical inference. The objectives of this course are to give students confidence in manipulating and drawing conclusions from data and provide them with a critical framework for evaluating study designs and results. An important feature of the course is the use of an intelligent tutoring system developed at Carnegie Mellon called "StatTutor." StatTutor aims to facilitate understanding of statistical ideas and analytical techniques by helping students construct useful knowledge representations and thereby develop effective problem-solving skills. It uses a specified outline of steps to follow in solving problems, or "scaffolding". StatTutor will use scaffolding and immediate feedback flexibly, tracking and responding to individual students as they navigate the learning environment.
