Kindergarten teacher Heather Lopez works with her students on consonant-vowel-consonant (C-V-C) single-syllable words as they learn to read. Some students need to sound out some of the words while others are already able to blend the onset with the rime. Ms. Lopez holds up a word for the students to read and then act out. She uses this process first for whole group guided practice. She then calls on individual students to read the word and has the whole class act it out as a means of helping them remember the word's meaning. Calling on individual students helps her informally assess where each students is at in their language development and specifically their ability to blend the onset and the rime.

8th Grade Science teacher Peter Hill from King Middle School in Maine shares a quick strategy tool and strategy he refers to as Ňword cloudÓ. The Ňword cloudÓ is generated by a computer program that takes words from an article and generates a ŇcloudÓ with different sizes of words with the size emphasizing the frequency of the word. Mr. Hill uses this as a quick pre-reading activity to increase curiosity and engagement and to have students anticipate what the article or essay is about and what the main idea is. Teachers might also consider a twist to this idea and have student groups create their own word cloud after reading a selected text.

Jennifer Brouhard understands that her fifth graders often struggle in knowing which parts of a text are essential ideas and which parts are merely supporting details. She teaches students a process that helps them know how to work with a text in order to pull out the key information. Students first work in small groups making a ŇKeep It or Junk ItÓ list. Each groupŐs list is then posted around the room. Two students lead the class through the next step of the process in which the class goes through each group list and must justify their reason to keep or junk each item on the list. Jennifer implements the strategy differently with each class period depending upon their specific needs. Jennifer points out that although the social studies content is important, she finds it more important to teach students how to critically analyze any text they encounter.
