This is a two-part teaching unit about the controversy among conservationists over a proposal to turn part of Yosemite National Park into a dam to furnish water to San Francisco. The first part explores the history of the conservation movement in general, while the second links to primary records, such as Congressional debates, of Hetch Hetchy itself.

This site looks at the work of this advocate for women's reproductive freedom. Sanger worked to help develop simpler, less costly, and more effective methods of birth control. The textile industry spread like wildfire across the South in the years following Reconstruction. Dozens of mills across North and South Carolina drew workers from rural and mountain farms, who traded in farm life for life in the mill village. There, workers lived in homes rented out by the mill, shopped in stores run by the mill, and went to church and school in structures built by the mill. The mill owners often tried to cultivate a sense of family in the mill village. This "family" included the children of the village, who very often left school to work in the cotton mills alongside their parents and siblings.

The material is designed to cover 2 semesters and content covers discovery and settlement of the New World, the formation of the nation, nationalism and expansion, Jeffersonian Republicanism, the Age of Jackson, the Civil War, Reconstruction, westward expansion, the Gilded Age, rise of unions, the Progressive Age, World War I, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, Civil Rights Movement, and the Imperial Presidency.

Welcome to History 147, the second in the introductory surveys of U.S. history. We begin in that decade when the United States in three years (1845-48) grew by 50 percent. Through the Civil War to the 20th century, we explore how different people experienced the transformation of the country into an industrial nation and emerging world power. Those who would like to pursue their study of American history will want to take Hist 146 (U.S. History I) and Hist 148 (U.S. History III).
