An overview of the 5 courses offered for free by Teachers Without Borders. For teachers who do not wish to earn the Certificate of Teaching Mastery, Courses 1 - 4 are available to be taken as separate, "stand-alone" courses. Given the distinct nature and focus of each course, a teacher may choose to take only 1 or 2 courses, 3 or 4 as needed to support the work that they are doing in their classroom. This kind of course flexibility allows teachers to choose what they need and to enter any course at any time.

Discussions are an important component of many forms of online student interaction. For students to benefit from an online discussion, it is important for teachers to generate relevant topics, effectively moderate student activity and participate regularly. This episode will highlight several strategies to help you manage online discussions more effectively, and make them more beneficial for your students.

The first course in a five-course series updating teacher skills and mastery, the purpose of which is to enhance the teaching profession and build teacher mentors on a local level. In Course 1, In this course, you'll be introduced to educational theories and approaches to learning and how to apply them to your classroom; aspects of effective teaching; and contemporary issues in education. The material reflects a pattern of inclusive, discovery-oriented, culturally-attuned, and globally-aware teaching.

In this course, teachers be introduced to thematic learning and cooperative learning techniques. Teachers will have a chance to develop lesson plans with these ideas in mind. You are given practical tools for classroom management and ways in which you can guide students to think about their own process of learning. In this course, you'll explore your own cultural competence in the classroom; apply multiculturalism to problem-solving; receive training on service learning; and discuss how to create and sustain connections with classrooms around the world.

This final course in the Certificate of Teaching Mastery focuses on the application of teacher training to international development.

This case study examines the use of eBooks and eReaders as an extension of the usual Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS). This initiative was undertaken as part of the DUCKLING research project (Delivering University Curricula: Knowledge, Learning and Innovation Gains) conducted by the Beyond Distance Research Alliance at the University of Leicester in the UK.

While the context of this study involves distance students, using electronic books can have applications in any discipline where students are required to undertake a significant amount of reading. This case study discusses some advantages of using eBooks, and outlines the process involved in creating and uploading them to an eReader device.

This book is a collection of essays on Engineering and Engineers. It describes a variety of views of and approaches to Engineering with the goal of providing a modern picture of this exciting area and its contributions to society.

This student module summarizes a presentation developed by Efrain O'Neill and Luis Jimenez for developing student awareness and competencies in engineering ethics. It defines ethics, provides a brief introduction to three ethical theories, sets forth useful frameworks and templates for ethical problem solving in engineering, and outlines the professional and code-based ethical responsibilities of engineers in Puerto Rico. A corresponding instructor module provides engineering professors with guidelines for integrating these matters into their courses. This instructor module employs a "train the trainers" strategy that is amenable both to an EAC (ethics across the curriculum) and ABET strategy. This module is being developed as a part of a project funded by the National Science Foundation, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF-SES-0551779.

This case study examines the use of online asynchronous discussions as part of a large professional practice class for primary mathematics teachers. Online forums within Blackboard are used to host discussions about video lectures, support assessments and to enable students to ask questions and receive advice about content. The realities of managing large scale online discussions are discussed, along with strategies for effective facilitation.

Web 2.0 tools can be useful for any situation where discussion and content sharing is desired, and where accessing current information in certain topic areas can be advantageous for learning. This case study examines how and why Lubna Alam from the University of Canberra used the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) as a central hub that both provided her students with easy access to the class blogs, wiki and Twitter, and a place where information from the different technologies was amalgamated. The integration of web 2.0 technologies into the learning process is examined, highlighting how this can improve student engagement, communication and collaboration.

The "Incident at Morales" dramatizes a fictional industrial accident that occurred at a chemical plant in the village of Morales. Produced by the National Institute for Engineering Ethics with a grant from the National Science Foundation, this video raises a series of important ethical problems that engineers and other professionals face when they make decisions and solve problems in the dynamic, competitive context of business. This module provides a theory-building activity where students plan and carry out an imaginary public hearing into who is responsible for the incident. It sets forth summaries of the different senses of the concept of moral responsibility, outlines the different constituencies participating in the public hearing, and provides a time line for preparing for, carrying out, and debriefing on the public hearing. Students learn about moral responsibility by using different responsibility frameworks to prepare public statements, raise questions, and reach blame assessments about the incident at morales. This module is being developed as a part of an NSF-funded project, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF SES 0551779.

This course is designed to equip the student with the basic academic, professional, and personal skills needed in college. Of course, some of the skills this course presents may take a lifetime to master! Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: clarify and state your individual educational goals, and formulate specific plans to work towards the goals; design and implement a personal time management plan; identify your preferred learning style; describe and employ critical thinking and creative thinking skills; adequately describe effective listening, note taking, memory retention, and writing skills, and methods for improving these skills; identify and accurately judge the credibility of websites; describe and use different methods of exam preparation; explain test anxiety and list strategies for reducing it; describe the interview process and strategies for successful interviewing; create a resume and a cover letter. This free course may be completed online at any time. It has been developed through a partnership with the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges; the Saylor Foundation has modified some WSBCTC materials. (Try College 101)

This case study examines how the use of a wiki can help a teacher effectively facilitate student collaboration with on-campus or distance students. It discusses the importance of providing technical support for both staff and students, planning clearly defined collaborative learning activities, and designing relevant assessment strategies to help support students develop effective teamwork skills.
