Students will create a clown portrait using tempera paint, oil pastels, and collage. They will look at prints of clowns from artist Pablo Picasso, Red Skelton, George Rouault, and Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus.

Students will view a PowerPoint presentation of various portraits by different artists. They will observe facial expressions and the emotions they convey in these works of art.
Students will learn how to draw facial expressions and paint a portrait which portrays a particular expression or emotion.
" This class examines frameworks for making and sharing visual artifacts using a trans-cultural, trans-historical, constructionist approach. It explores the relationship between perceived reality and the narrative imagination, how an author's choice of medium and method of construction constrains the work, how desire is integrated into the structure of a work, and how the cultural/economic opportunity for exhibition/distribution affects the realization of a work. Students submit three papers and three visual projects. Work is discussed and critiqued in class. Students present final projects an exhibition at the end of term. Instruction and practice in written and oral communication is provided."
Internationally acclaimed photographer Todd Hido has made a name for himself capturing unsettling images of the suburban landscape, looking for the anonymous, even mysterious aspects of American life. This Educator Guide introduces students to Hido's art and provides an historical and critical context for the artists' evocative images of Bay Area homes and posed female models.
Pieces together the story of the James Robinson family from artifacts found in archaeological excavations around the house where they lived for nearly a century. An African American born free in 1799, Robinson worked in a Virginia tavern earning nearly $500 to purchase 170 acres of land near Bull Run. There he built a log cabin, and his family turned the land into a prosperous farm, making him one of the wealthiest African Americans in the Manassas area in the mid-19th century.
The students will use the portrait "Mending Socks" by Archibald Motley to explore how objects can be used to tell about a person's attributes and life.
