Urban governance comprises the various forces, institutions, and movements that guide economic and physical development, the distribution of resources, social interactions, and other aspects of daily life in urban areas. This course examines governance from legal, political, social, and economic perspectives. In addition, we will discuss how these structures constrain collective decision making about particular urban issues (immigration, education…). Assignments will be nightly readings and a short paper relating an urban issue to the frameworks outlined in the class.

This course will introduce the student to the field of international political economy, teaching students the ways in which economics and politics influence each other when it comes to creating policy. Economic policy can be an important instrument of statecraft and diplomacy between countries, yet countries can also use economic policy to punish or express disapproval towards other countries using sanctions. In this course, the student will learn about the international organizations and regimes that are designed to facilitate international economic transactions and ensure economic stability, such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The student will also review the impact that globalization has on the world economy and the gap between rich and poor countries. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: identify, explain, and compare major theories in the field of international political economy; analyze the effects of trade policies on domestic and international actors; evaluate the costs and benefits of Foreign Direct Investment and Sovereign Debt; explain the development of the international currency system and analyze the effects of domestic policies; compare and contrast approaches to human rights and access to basic human needs. This course is designed to acquaint beginning students with some of the fundamental principles of international relations such as realism and idealism. Realism, for example is based on the assumption that the state constitutes the most important actor in the international system. The course will also explore the nature of idealism, which emphasizes the role of international norms and ethics, such as the preservation of human rights, as a means of realizing international justice. The course will also analyze international political economy and various theories ranging from mercantilism to dependency theory.

This course will introduce you to the politics of Latin America and the Caribbean and examine the causes and effects of the region’s development. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: describe the geographic, demographic, economic, and cultural context within which Latin American political systems are situated; explain the region’s lack of development with reference to contending theories of political economy: modernization, structuralism, dependency, and neo-classical; describe the processes of democratization, with special focus on institution-building that promote democratic participation and accountability; trace the historical evolution of U.S. policy towards Latin America and its impact on the region’s political development; acquire multiple perspectives on and discuss current issues facing the region, including trade and economic integration, the war on drugs, immigration, and globalization. " Networks are ubiquitous in our modern society. The World Wide Web that links us to and enables information flows with the rest of the world is the most visible example. It is, however, only one of many networks within which we are situated. Our social life is organized around networks of friends and colleagues. These networks determine our information, influence our opinions, and shape our political attitudes. They also link us, often through important but weak ties, to everybody else in the United States and in the world. Economic and financial markets also look much more like networks than anonymous marketplaces. Firms interact with the same suppliers and customers and use Web-like supply chains. Financial linkages, both among banks and between consumers, companies and banks, also form a network over which funds flow and risks are shared. Systemic risk in financial markets often results from the counterparty risks created within this financial network. Food chains, interacting biological systems and the spread and containment of epidemics are some of the other natural and social phenomena that exhibit a marked networked structure. This course will introduce the tools for the study of networks. It will show how certain common principles permeate the functioning of these diverse networks and how the same issues related to robustness, fragility, and interlinkages arise in several different types of networks."

Explores political and historical evolution of Soviet state and society from 1917 Revolution to its demise in 1991. Subject covers the creation of a revolutionary regime; causes and nature of the Stalin revolution; post-Stalinist efforts to achieve radical political and social reform; and causes of the Soviet collapse. At its greatest extent the former Soviet Union encompassed a geographical area that covered one-sixth of the Earth's landmass. It spanned 11 time zones and contained over 100 distinct nationalities, 22 of which numbered over one million in population. In the 74 years from the October Revolution in 1917 to the fall of Communism in 1991, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, its leaders and its people, had to face a number of difficult challenges: the overthrow of the Tsarist autocracy, the establishment of a new state, four years of civil war, a famine, transition to a mixed economy, political strife after Lenin's death, industrialization, collectivization, a second famine, political Show Trials, World War II, post-war reconstruction and repression, the "Thaw" after Stalin's death, Khrushchev's experimentation, and Brezhnev's decline. Each of these challenges engendered new solutions and modifications in what can be loosely called the evolving "Soviet system..

This course treats public-sector policies, programs, and projects that attempt to increase employment through development-promoting measures in the economic realm, through support and regulation. It discusses the types of initiatives, tasks, and environments that are most conducive to equitable outcomes, and emphasizes throughout the understandings gained about why certain initiatives work and others don’t.
