Advanced Seminar: Urban Nature and City Design, Fall 2005

Abstract:: Examines the urban environment as a natural phenomenon, human habitat, medium of expression, and forum for action. Subject has two related, major themes: how ideas of nature influence the way cities are perceived, designed, built, and managed; and how natural processes and urban form interact and the consequences of these for human health safety and welfare. The course has several major themes: how ideas of nature influence the way cities are perceived, designed, built, and managed; how natural processes and urban form interact and the consequences for human health and welfare; how planners and designers can shape the urban natural environment. Each student researches and presents a case, either historical or an example of contemporary theory and practice.

America's First Look into the Camera: Daguerreotype Portraits and Views, 1839-1864

Abstract:: This site consists of more than 650 photographs dating from 1839 to 1864. Portrait daguerreotypes produced by the Mathematics and Statisticsew Brady studio make up the major portion of the collection. The collection also includes early architectural views by John Plumbe, several Philadelphia street scenes, early portraits by pioneering daguerreotypist Robert Cornelius, and copies of painted portraits.

Abstract:: tells the story of the first African American to plat and register a town before the Civil War. Born into slavery in 1777 in South Carolina, Frank McWorter moved to Kentucky with his owner, where he married and earned cash as a laborer to purchase freedom for his wife and later himself. He bought a tract of military land in Illinois, where he and his wife planted and raised enough crops to eventually buy freedom for 16 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Abstract:: These scenes show the city of Philadelphia as seen by the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) instrument. The river running through the city is the Delaware which defines the boundary between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In the larger city area image, north is approximately up. The river runs south. Just near the top of the image, upstream of the city and where the Delaware River turns west is the New Jersey city of Trenton. The shortwave infrared (TM band 5), infrared (TM band 4), and visible green (TM band 2) channels are displayed in the images as red, green, and blue respectively. In this combination, barren and-or recently cultivated land appears red to pink, vegetation appears green, water is dark blue, and artificial structures of concrete and asphalt appear dark grey or black.

Abstract:: This site helps teachers plan a trip to see Independence Hall, Congress Hall, Old City Hall, the Liberty Bell, the First and Second Banks of the U.S., Franklin Court, and other historic buildings and artifacts (in Philadelphia) associated with our nation's founding. Lessons are for Grades 4-6; however, many can be adapted for other grades.
