2nd Summer Introduction to Design, January (IAP) 2003

Abstract:: Introduce students to the creative design process, based on the scientific method and peer review, by application of fundamental principles and learning to complete projects according to schedule and within budget. Subject relies on active learning through a major team-based design-and-build project focused on the need for a new consumer product identified by each team. Topics to be learned while teams create, design, build, and test their product ideas include formulating strategies, concepts and modules, and estimation, concept selection, machine elements, design for manufacturing, visual thinking, communication, teamwork, and professional responsibilities.

Advanced Writing Seminar, Spring 2004

Abstract:: Provides the opportunity for students to work intensively on developing the research claims and arguments in their writing. Open to both Master's and Ph.D. students and designed to maximize cross-fertilization between programs and research areas. First part devoted to reading and writing assignments that guide students in focusing on the connections between their research claims, the evidence that supports those claims, and the reasoning that underlies that support. In the latter part, students provide successive drafts of their project for group commentary and guidance in revision. The purpose of this seminar is to expose the student to a number of different types of writing that one may encounter in a professional career. The class is an opportunity to write, review, rewrite and present a point of view both orally and in written form.

Abstract:: At this website, the Chemistry Learning and Support Studios offers directions for how to use Calibrated Peer Review (CPR). The site links to the CPR homepage (http://cpr.molsci.ucla.edu) for helpful handouts and white paper and FAQ information. They also provide information regarding how to use CPR in the classroom, upcoming CPR workshops, and tips for instructors. Users can also access a Power Point and streaming video overview of CPR.

Abstract:: This freshman course explores the scientific publication cycle, primary vs. secondary sources, and online and in-print bibliographic databases; how to search, find, evaluate, and cite information; indexing and abstracting; using special resources (e.g. patents) and "grey literature" (e.g. technical reports and conference proceedings); conducting Web searches; and constructing literature reviews.

Abstract:: Provides graduate students and fellows with techniques that enhance both validity and responsible conduct in scientific practice. Topics include study design, laboratory practice, treatment of data, human and animal research, intellectual property, preparation of proposals, research papers, posters, and oral presentations. Also discussed are mentoring relationships and career options. Aspects of responsible research conduct are integrated as appropriate to the specific topic under discussion. Subject satisfies the training grant requirements of the NIH for education in the responsible conduct of research. This course is designed to provide graduate students and postdoctoral associates with techniques that enhance both validity and responsible conduct in scientific practice. Lectures present practical steps for developing skills in scientific research and are combined with discussion of cases. The course covers study design, preparation of proposals and manuscripts, peer review, authorship, use of humans and non-human animals in research, allegations of misconduct, and intellectual property. Also discussed are mentoring relationships and career options. Aspects of responsible research conduct are integrated into lectures and case discussion as appropriate to the specific topic. This course also satisfies the training grant requirements of the NIH for education in the responsible conduct of research.
