Ocean Explorer Expedition Education Modules (EEM) are designed to reach out in new ways to teachers, students, and the general public, and share the excitement of daily at-sea discoveries and the science behind NOAA's major ocean exploration initiatives with the people around the world. The Bioluminescence 2009: Living Light on the Deep Sea Floor Expedition offers a unique opportunity to engage explorers of all ages as we continue our journeys to parts of our ocean planet that few have seen - the bioluminescent benthic environments of the deep ocean.

This Climate Change Impacts Collection provides the teacher and their students the opportunity to explore some of the environmental changes already observed, from the Arctic to tropical regions. Data sources provide historic precipitation and temperature records, allowing students to compare changes in their own local area to others. Lessons included, provide opportunities for place-based instruction related to climate change, others provided a more global perspective. This animation shows the daily sea ice surface temperature over the northern hemisphere from September 2002 through May 2003. The sea ice surface temperature was measured by the MODIS instrument on the Aqua satellite. Since this instrument cannot take measurements through clouds or in the dark, in dark or cloud-covered regions or areas with suspect data quality, the prior days value is retained until a valid data reading is obtained. The color of the sea ice indicates the sea ice surface temperature.

This course covers the complete cycle of designing an ocean system using computational design tools for the conceptual and preliminary design stages. Students complete the projects in teams with each student responsible for a specific subsystem. Lectures cover such topics as hydrodynamics; structures; power and thermal aspects of ocean vehicles; environment, materials, and construction for ocean use; and generation and evaluation of design alternatives. The course focuses on innovative design concepts chosen from high-speed ships, submersibles, autonomous vehicles, and floating and submerged deep-water offshore platforms. Lectures on ethics in engineering practice are included, and instruction and practice in oral and written communication is provided.

This OLogy activity, a hide-and-seek game, introduces kids to the many different ecosystems in the ocean. The activity opens by telling kids that the ocean is made up of many different communities called ecosystems, and that all living things in an ecosystem depend on each other. Then, in the Think and Link game, kids are challenged to connect all the featured organisms in three ecosystems.

In this year's seminar, we will embark on a scientific journey through some of the most controversial topics about the origin and formation of our home planet. Human activities, both knowingly and unknowingly, affect the ocean. A team of 19 scientists, including one from NOAA, undertook the task of mapping how humans have impacted the ocean over time. This fun Web site is part of OLogy, where kids can collect virtual trading cards and create projects with them. Here, they learn about how living in the water differs from living on land. An ichthyologist first explains that ocean creatures have special features that allow them to breathe, eat, communicate, and move in water. (Each feature has its own trading card, which provides more detailed info.)Then students are challenged to "try to make the connection" by playing the Journey to the Bottom of the Sea game, in which they are given six turns to match creature descriptions with properties of water.
