A Caesarean section, also known as C-section, is a surgical procedure in which incisions are made through a mother's abdomen (laparotomy) and uterus (hysterotomy) to deliver one or more babies. It is usually performed when a vaginal delivery would put the baby's or mother's life or health at risk, although in recent times it has been also performed upon request for childbirths that could otherwise have been natural. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that the rate of Caesarean sections should not exceed 15% in any country. This programme includes narrated surgical video of the procedure as well as interactive case exercises and a brief self-assessment.

An episiotomy is a surgical incision through the perineum made to enlarge the vagina and assist childbirth. The incision can be midline or at an angle from the posterior end of the vulva, is performed under local anaesthetic (pudendal anesthesia) and is sutured closed after delivery. It is one of the most common medical procedures performed on women, and although its routine use in childbirth has steadily declined in recent decades.

A useful resource based on many years of semi-rural private and hospital practice in South Africa involving major trauma, surgery and obstetrics, in addition to the common problems of general practice. I have always felt it very useful to be able to confirm facts and figures at the bedside if needed and this has been the motivation that has taken me over 40 years. This meant being able to absorb sufficient information whilst seeing a patient, to confirm a diagnosis and initiate a plan of therapy in the shortest time span possible. This led to a synopsis of medical management for the semi-rural Hospital and General Practitioner, covering a wide range of medical conditions. This has necessitated markedly abbreviating text, the use of Hyperlinks for cross-referencing and to eliminate duplication and the extensive use of Tables for comparisons and allowing separation of the “WOOD from the TREES”. Patient Handouts are useful at times. Less commonly encountered problems are only dealt with briefly. It has predominantly South African references but the standard approach to subjects makes it applicable to any hospital or GP practitioners Of necessity, it relies heavily on information from many other sources (journals, conferences & clinical meetings) and I can only acknowledge my gratitude to these teachers en-mass, as it is impossible to do so individually. It does need regular updating and improving and the aim is to do this continually.

A sexually transmitted disease (STD), also known as sexually transmitted infection (STI) or venereal disease (VD), is an illness that has a significant probability of transmission between humans or animals by means of sexual contact, including vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex. While in the past, these illnesses have mostly been referred to as STDs or VD, in recent years the term sexually transmitted infection (STI) has been preferred, as it has a broader range of meaning; a person may be infected, and may potentially infect others, without showing signs of disease. Some STIs can also be transmitted via use of an IV drug needle after its use by an infected person, as well as through childbirth or breastfeeding. Sexually transmitted infections have been well known for hundreds of years.

This module is meant primarily for medical students but may also be useful for residents and health practitioners. The module includes three interactive case studies with some background information as well as discussion of possible post-surgery complications, narrated video clips of each stage the total abdominal hysterectomy procedure, and a self-assessment on the procedure.
