This lesson acquaints students with historical and current concepts of civil disobedience. They will also consider issues that affect their own lives in relation to civil disobedience.
This course surveys: (1) the major causes of deadly conflict around the world; (2) various definitions of “peace” and the conditions under which it occurs and is sustained; and (3) the style and comparative success of various strategies such as building peace movements and nonviolent social change as ways to achieve peace.
Storyteller and educator Awele Makeba combines performing arts and history to tell a powerful story from the American civil rights movement. A quiz, thought provoking question, and links for further study are provided to create a lesson around the 9-minute video. Educators may use the platform to easily "Flip" or create their own lesson for use with their students of any age or level.
