This bibliography was developed to highlight some of the outstanding trade books published for older children and teens that can be used for the text complexity component of the CCS in grades 6-12.* All of the books have been selected based on their literary quality and other components of qualitative evaluation. Many of the books offer sophisticated narrative structures and other characteristics factored into quantitative evaluation. And the list as a whole offers a wide variety of books reflecting diversity of subject matter and style, allowing for a range of choices in matching reader to text and task.
This session will introduce you to the breadth of opportunities in non-fiction book publishing and to help you develop an idea for a non-fiction book. Please note that this is a taster - a general introduction to a subject - with content that is updated each year in the actual MA course at UCF.
The goal of this activity is for students to learn how to tell a story in order to make a complex topic (such as global warming or ozone holes) easier for a reader to grasp. Students realize that the narrative impulse underlies even scientific and technical writing and gain a better understanding of the role of myth as a "science" of imagination that helps us to gain insight into human motivation.
Groups will develop a Reading Guide for each non-fiction resource book for units in science, Social Sciences, and other curriculum areas. Students will identify useful features each book and where the important information will be found. Reviewing non-fiction features of print resources will familiarize the class with material on reserve for the unit. Overviewing and identifying text features will help students determine how to approach the various formats of text relevant to the topic.
This lesson focuses on Shakespeare's "Sonnet 130." It contains a copy of the sonnet, questions to use when discussing and analyzing the sonnet, and a creative component. This lesson has modifications for Novice Low Limited English Proficient students.
This integrated plan uses non-fiction text and wolves to motivate students with language arts and science. Students will read a nonfiction text and use metacognitive skills of guided reading and KWHL chart to monitor comprehension and extend vocabulary.
