This interactive adventure engages children in a story-based scenario that emphasizes concepts of remote sensing and how NASA scientists use satellite imagery to better understand the Earth's environmental changes. It introduces students to Earth science concepts, beginning with classifying objects in satellite images by shape, color and texture, building a foundation for interpreting and understanding remote sensing. The story is set in New York City, chosen for its size, diversity and the visibility of prominent features in satellite imagery. Lesson plans to accompany the adventure are in development. Recommended for: children ages 5-10.

This class is an interdisciplinary survey that explores the experiences of people of African descent through the overlapping approaches of history, literature, anthropology, legal studies, media studies, performance, linguistics, and creative writing. It connects the experiences of African Americans and of other American minorities, focusing on social, political, and cultural histories, and on linguistic patterns. Activities include lectures, discussions, workshops, and required field trips that involve minimal cost to students.

The readings focus on the city's social and physical histories, and the class discussions compare New York's development to patterns in other cities.

Students will learn to identify musical styles and musicians associated with Harlem, focusing on jazz. They will learn about the special role of music in Harlem as a unifier of a community and of a culture. Students can listen to audio samples and analyze elements of jazz and its musicians, participate in a group dance activity, and partake in language arts and visual arts extensions to reinforce key concepts learned.

Key themes in the guide include governance, public health and other reforms, culture and public policy, immigration and race, economic life, and the role of women in New York City's history. The guide is intended to help students consider questions related to these themes, and to help them use what they've learned about the history of New York as a starting point for finding out more about their own community.

The shortwave infrared (TM band 5), infrared (TM band 4), and visible green (TM band 2) channels are displayed in the images as red, green, and blue respectively. In this combination, barren and-or recently cultivated land appears red to pink, vegetation appears green, water is dark blue, and artificial structures of concrete and asphalt appear dark grey or black.
