This site provides 26 films of San Francisco from before and after the Great Earthquake and Fire. The earthquake struck on April 18, 1906, along the San Andreas Fault, damaging most central California cities and killing more than 3,000 people. These films show Market Street, Chinatown, a parade, San Francisco viewed from a balloon, and vast devastation from the 8.3 magnitude earthquake and 3-day fire.

When we think of hurricanes, we now think of Katrina and its devastating effects on the Gulf Coast in Mississippi and Louisiana.
Though Katrina did not affect North Carolina, many hurricanes have passed through the state and caused similar damage. Through the years, people here have lost their homes, their possessions, and their communities to wind, floods, and storm surge. Hurricane Hugo (1989) is considered the most intense to hit this state, and Hazel (1954) is the deadliest, but Hurricane Floyd is considered one of the most damaging hurricanes to hit North Carolina. But what caused the damage may surprise you...
This exercise is appropriate for high school, and some middle school students. It allows the students to look at how their community is preparing for possible disasters and then allows a simulation that demonstrate how difficult handling disasters can be. The exercise involves such skills as: planning, interviewing, writing, public speaking and analysis and problem solving.
Students will discuss and understand measurement of a single event and measurement over time. After listening to excerpts from an oral history with Earl Cavenaugh, a survivor of Hurricane Floyd, students will understand how people devised ways of keeping measurements during that flood and earlier floods.
Pupils will name the different types of natural disasters which occur from time to time. Pupils will describe the causes of the different natural disasters. Pupils will describe the effects they have on people and their environment. Pupils will locate, on a map, places which have been affected by natural disasters.
This lesson invites students to read personal accounts of natural disasters in the U.S. during the late 1800s and early 1990s -- the great Chicago fire (1871), the Johnstown Flood (1889), the San Francisco earthquake and fire (1906), the Titanic (1912), the 1918 Flu Epidemics, the Dust Bowl (1930s-40s). Students research a disaster and create a presentation in which they assume the role of a witness to the event.

To experience the three types of material stress related to rocks tensional, compressional and shear students break bars of soap using only their hands. They apply force created by the muscles in their own hands to put pressure on the soap, a model for the larger scale, real-world phenomena that forms, shapes and moves the rocks of our planet. They also learn the real-life implications of understanding stress in rocks, both for predicting natural hazards and building safe structures.
Students are asked to explain how climate and extreme weather events affect people's lives.
