For more than 40 years, Young Audiences of Northern California has been providing quality arts education programs to K-12 schools and communities - over 250,000 each year. This Educator Guide explores the history of arts education in California and the Bay Area and provides a wide array of local resources.

These images of the California missions show the transformation of the mission structures over the past two centuries. Some show the types of people who would have lived in or visited the missions. The missions mark California’s Spanish colonial past, and remain today as sites for community gatherings and heritage.

California has always been a place of cultural interaction. Early California evolved and changed with each new group of settlers. These images depict the developing interconnectedness of California's early cultures. They also underscore the importance of movement and later settlement of peoples in California. Some of the modern images underscore the contested and often romanticized nature of California’s Spanish and Mexican heritage. This is a collection of primary source images.

Alvin Pouissant on the rise of Black on Black murders. Program consists of a number of magazine-style segments, including a Stephen Curwood interview with Dr. Patricia Frazier (of Robert B. Brigham Hospital) and Henrietta Aladjem (author of the book, The Sun Is My Enemy) on the disease lupus, two studio performances by Stanton Davis and the Ghetto Mysticism Band (who perform 'Funkified Tofu' and 'Crescent Gypsies'), an 'Open Platform' debate moderated by Melvin Moore on whether or not Massachusetts should fund Medicaid abortions (with debaters Dr. Mildred Jefferson, President of the both the Massachusetts and the National Right to Life committees, and Niki Nichols Gamble, Executive Director of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, and panel reporters James Drummey, news editor of Review of The News magazine and Susan Sprecher of WBCN Radio), the 'Say Brother News' with Karen Holmes, Margaret Tarter, Leah Fletcher, Eric Sampedro, and Tanya Hart, and the 'Community Calendar.' Tarter's report features an interview with Jack Hayes, editor of The Circle (a Boston paper for Native American residents); Fletcher's report features an interview with Dr. Alvin Pouissant, who discusses 'Black on Black' violence and the reasons for it. Using the book, "When The Legends Die" and a Native American story-telling unit, students gather a family story of their own.

Creation of the Mashpee District in 1685. Program focuses on the August, 1976 lawsuit filed by the Wampanoag Indians of Massachusetts against the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in an effort to reclaim lands sold from 1763 to 1870 without Congressional approval. Host Barbara Barrow speaks with guest Russell Peters, President of the Mashpee Tribal Council, about the problems the council is having regaining tribal lands, when was the lands were taken, when the council decided to file suit, how Peters feels about the claim that Wampanoag marriages with Black and white Americans has diluted their culture and claim to lands, if Mashpee becoming a town gave Native Americans the power to sell their own land (as they did willingly, according to Barrow), and what will happen to the people who are living in Mashpee who feel they own their land and houses. In this lesson, students are given the opportunity to focus on the variety of responses the film Return of Navajo Boy evokes as they create their own "film within a film," learn about cultural expression, and engage in discussion and reflective writing activities.

Julia Parker is one of the few remaining traditional Native American basket weavers in California. This Educator Guide traces the history of basket weaving in the West Coast Indian populations.

Attorney Ann Gilmore, Co-council for the Mashpee Tribal Council in their lawsuit against the Commonwealth of Massachusetts regarding the illegal seizure of land, compares the issues in the Regents of the University of California V. Bakke case to that of the Council's case.

The essay's wider focus is the nature of native cultural and social change under the uneven and often disruptive effects of contact with non-native people and American economic, political and social institutions. The book collects together and republishes a set of essays by Frank G. Speck that were originally issued as separate articles in The Southern Workman. The papers, which were written early in Speck's career, during the period 1907-1911, draw upon his first-hand observations in the Indian and Oklahoma Territories on the eve of Oklahoma statehood. In contrast to his more dispassionate ethnographic writings, which were published in venues read primarily by professional anthropologists and folklorists, these essays were published for a popular audience in the journal of the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, an important college serving African American and Native American students. Reflecting the sensibilities of Speck and his anthropological circle at the time, these brief essays are accessible, provocative and sometimes biting in tone and represent the work of a young scholar seeking to develop a public, progressive, critical and engaged stance relative to the social problems faced by the peoples--particularly Native American and African American peoples--of Oklahoma and of the United States more broadly. For modern readers, the essays are little utilized sources for the study of Oklahoma, Freedmen, and Muscogee (Creek) Indian cultural history. They also deepen historical understandings of Speck and his work and enrich scholarly knowledge of early efforts at developing anthropology as a means of cultural critique. Based on ethnographic field research undertaken in the Creek Nation, Indian Territory in 1904 and 1905, Speck's essay describes the history and present-day circumstances of the Creek Freedmen and other peoples of African American ancestry then living in the Creek Nation on the eve of Oklahoma Statehood. He generalizes about the status of African American peoples in the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Seminole Nations on the basis of his observations among the Creeks and his travels throughout Indian Territory. Barbara Barrow discusses the recent executive order issued by Massachusetts legislature recognizing Native Americans with Clif Saunders, Director of the Boston Indian Council. Topics include the implications that recognition will have for Native Americans, the services Native Americans requested of the state before the executive order was issued (both socioeconomic and legal), the hopes for federal recognition, the still unacknowledged issues of Native Americans in the Boston area despite the executive order, issues raised on a recent Today show about Native Americans not wanting their land back, the 'paternalism' of the the United States government, and the desire for self-determination.
