Host Barbara Barrow introduces the topic of Black theater and stage works Raisin (the Tony-Award-winning musical for 1974), The Black Dyad (about Black male and female relationships) and 'Theatre in Reverse,' a Say Brother theater piece with an in-studio vocal performance by Al Jarreau with dance performances (with the intent of drawing the audience's attention to sound and light, rather than to the performers). Boston based artists discuss the meaning of Black art. Host Jim Spruill leads a discussion among 17 Boston-based artists on what Black art is and to whom the Black artist speaks. Group assembled includes Orma Jo Flint, Steve Hussein, Hakim Jami, Bob Nellums, Joanne Robinson, Robert Ruff, Joanne Sanders, Ralf Coleman, Ali Yusef, Carolyn Fitchert, Charles Holley, Gary Rickson, Dana Chandler, Jr., Lovett Thompson, John Wilson, and Elma Lewis. Program includes stills of the work of featured painters and sculptors woven into the discussion, with featured performances by the musicians, dancers and poets. Black Solidarity Day 1972. Program addresses a variety of topics via a magazine-format presentation. Host John Slade introduces the following segments: 'Performance' with rock/jazz musicians Compost, 'Community Events' with Black Solidarity Day organizers Joseph Nkunta, Marie Firman, Karim Atiba Bayete, and Arnold Scott, 'Speak Out!' with Jack E. Robinson, President of the Boston Chapter of the NAACP (who talks about the need for adequate police protection in African American neighborhoods and a responsive police force), 'man on the street' interviews, in which Slade asks people whether or not they would like an African American officer to command their neighborhood's police district, a 'Save Our Cities Expo' review with Melvin Penn (a university student who interviews organizer Reverend Dr. Virgil Wood, Area Chairman of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference), and 'African Notes,' in which the building of the Volta Dam in Ghana is discussed. Program consists of numerous community affairs segments, the most prominent of which is a panel discussion directed by Sarah-Ann Shaw on African American youth and education in Boston. Guests include Jean McGuire (Roxbury resident and only Black Pupil Adjustment Counselor for the Boston public school system), Gerald Hill (an African American teacher and nominee for Interim Project Director of the King-Timilty Coalition), Francine Mills (director of a vocational program for Operation Exodus), John Jackson (an African American teacher involved with experimental work-study program of Boston public schools), and Patricia Raynor (parent and member of the Parents' Education Committee). Additional segments include musical performances by Gwen Michaels and The Stark Reality, a poetry reading by Linda Hall, staff reflections on a recent African-style wedding in Boston, and a reading of the community news by Jacqueline Banks. Cannonball Adderley and the Cannonball Express. Program contains numerous 'magazine-style' segments, of which the most prominent is host John Slade's interview with musician Cannonball Adderley. Accompanying the interview, in segments before and after, is performance footage of Adderley's jazz band Cannonball Express (with Bobby Timmons, Walter Booker and Roy McCurdy) shot live at Paul's Mall in Boston the night before the interview. Other segments include a performance by the Immala Blakely Dancers, an interview with Harvard psychiatry professor Dr. Alvin Pouissant about his book Why Blacks Kill Blacks, a demonstration of self-defense techniques using karate with black belt Harry Gardner, and a performance by jazz group The J.R. Brigham Hospital) and Henrietta Aladjem (author of the book, The Sun Is My Enemy) on the disease lupus, two studio performances by Stanton Davis and the Ghetto Mysticism Band (who perform 'Funkified Tofu' and 'Crescent Gypsies'), an 'Open Platform' debate moderated by Melvin Moore on whether or not Massachusetts should fund Medicaid abortions (with debaters Dr. Mildred Jefferson, President of the both the Massachusetts and the National Right to Life committees, and Niki Nichols Gamble, Executive Director of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, and panel reporters James Drummey, news editor of Review of The News magazine and Susan Sprecher of WBCN Radio), the 'Say Brother News' with Karen Holmes, Margaret Tarter, Leah Fletcher, Eric Sampedro, and Tanya Hart, and the 'Community Calendar.' Tarter's report features an interview with Jack Hayes, editor of The Circle (a Boston paper for Native American residents); Fletcher's report features an interview with Dr. Alvin Pouissant, who discusses 'Black on Black' violence and the reasons for it. Host John Slade introduces a moderated discussion led by Say Brother filmmaker Henry Johnson with Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) employees Barbara Brydie, Arnett Waters, and Russell Hill (who discuss the agency's threatened status due to a proposed withdrawal of federal aid in President Nixon's proposed budget), an interview and performance by vocalist Eddie B. with the Contemporary Jazz Trio; and an interview conducted by John Slade with Helaine Simmonds, Clarence Dilday, and Benjamin Jones of the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association (on Governor Francis Williams Sargent's judgeship nominations). Dick Lane remembers Dinah Washington. Program focuses on the music of Dinah Washington and the tradition of African American female musicians that she participated in. Host Hayes Burnett, a bass player, provides brief biographical information about Washington and interviews both Washington's husband Dick Lane and vocalist Mae Arnette (who was early in her career when Washington was at the height of hers). Both guests discuss what Washington was like, the origins of her music, the difficulties inherent to being a female, African American, musician, and what her life was like just before she died. Additional segments include a vocal performance by Arnette, a bass performance by Burnett (with accompaniment), 'Information' (on the origins of African American music), and 'Commentary' by Hayes Burnett (on the great African American female musicians). Eartha Kitt talks about her early childhood. Host Barbara Barrow-Murray speaks with vocalist and actress Eartha Kitt, in Boston with the production of Timbuktu! Topics include Timbuktu! as an extension of Kitt's Kismet, how long the show has been traveling, her role in Timbuktu! , the music in the production, interpreting her character Sahleem-La-Lume (which is not an essential one), her political positions and stance on the Vietnam War, and her difficult childhood. Program opens with excerpts from Kitt's interview with WGBH Radio FM's Ron Della Chiesa (host of the program Music America), and includes a studio dance performance of 'Birds of Paradise' from Timbuktu! This course is an interdisciplinary exploration of three broad topics concerning music in relation to time.Music as Architecture: the creation of musical shapes in time;Music as Memory: how musical understanding depends upon memory and reminiscence, with attention to analysis of musical structures; andTime as the Substance of Music: how different disciplines such as philosophy and neuroscience view the temporal dimension of musical processes and/or performances.Classroom discussion of these topics is complemented by three weekend concerts with pre-concert forums, jointly presented by the Boston Chamber Music Society (BCMS) and MIT Music & Theater Arts.

Program serves as a compilation of performances by the Boston Art Ensemble, Cannonball Adderley, Stanton Davis and the Ghetto Mysticism Band, Webster Lewis, and Charles Lloyd. 'Playing from the Music Malcolm Wrote, 'Program consists of segments from in-studio performances by musicians King Arthur and the Monty Williams Express, as well as poetry readings by Roxbury, Massachusetts, 'jazz poet' Robert Ruff. Brown Sugar in concert. Program consists of two halves, the first a performance by the vocalist group Brown Sugar backed by the instrumental group Message to the People. The second offers a variety of segments focusing on political and social issues, including: the political career of Gary, Indiana, Mayor Richard Hatcher, the adoption of Black and interracial children by African American families (as facilitated by the Boston based organization Black Recruitment Committee for Adoption and Foster Care), a Say Brother editorial on abortion rights by professor and historian A.B. Cast members discuss the The Wiz, based on L. Frank Baum's Wizard of OzProgram focuses on African American theater, with an emphasis on the national tour of the Broadway musical The Wiz. Host Barbara Barrow-Murray speaks with members of Wiz cast Ken Prymus (the Lion), Peggy Blue (Aunty Em), and Kamal (a former member of the National Center of Afro-American Artists who plays the 'Wiz') about their professional careers prior to their engagement with the touring company, their professional goals, whether or not The Wiz is a new adaptation of Baum's text, and what they have enjoyed about working on The Wiz. Program includes musical performances by 'Wiz' guests and previously aired studio performances by Chip Garnett (Duke Ellington's song 'Sophisticated Lady,' which he performed in the Broadway production of 'Bubbling Brown Sugar'), and Barbara Alston and Paula Larke (who both performed in For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Not Enuf by Ntozake Shange).
